Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Research, Cure, and Care Act of 2007

The Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis Research, Cure, and Care Act (PPARCCA) of 2007 is one important vehicle that will bring us closer to a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. PPARCCA is the first-ever comprehensive psoriasis authorizing legislation. In February, H.R. 1188 was introduced as in the House of Representatives by Rep. David Wu, D-Ore.-1st, with Rep. Jim Gerlach, R-Pa.-6th, and Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, D-Fla.-20th. Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., introduced S. 1459 on May 23, 2007 in the U.S. Senate. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., joined as an original co-sponsor with Sen. Menendez in introducing the bill.
This bipartisan measure calls upon the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to build their work in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis by:
- Expanding biomedical research
- Building CDC data collection / patient registry
- Calling for a federal summit on psoriasis
- Requiring an Institute of Medicine report on access to care
For less than $4 million, this legislation will catapult psoriasis research forward. Because some advances have been realized in the past few years, dollars invested today in psoriasis research will take us farther faster toward a cure. Further, solving the inflammation problem at the root of psoriasis will likely benefit other immune-based diseases. PPARCCA will also shed light on the issues patients experience in trying to access the care they need. By focusing on a patient registry, PPARCCA will further provide a unified database of clinical information for researchers. Finally, PPARCCA will create a focus for federal agencies to address issues and opportunities in psoriasis.
