View Full Version : Has anyone tried Kenelog injections?
Has anyone tried Kenelog injections? I tried doing research here on this website for it but they don't have any information on it. I tried the search engine in AOL and recieved some info. on it. I am trying a new Derm. because the others I had sucked. And he told me to try this med. They insert injections on the affected area in ur skin. There is no bad side effects like in Enbrel. I am thinking about using it.
:o Has anyone tried it here?
Here is some information I found:

Hi yesi,
I have pustular psoriasis on my hands and feet.
I did Kenalog- a one shot in the hip. Another time-right into the palm of my hands, then my feet. Hurt real bad and at first it seemed to help. Then it didn't. Had a bad flare after stopping. To me, it was not worth the pain. It's just another steroid.

Just want to be sure you read the part indicating there can be side effects. It is a steroid.
No serious systemic side effects are expected unless a large amount of Kenalog is used for a long period of time. If the drug is being absorbed into the system, you may experience blurred vision, halos around lights, an irregular heartbeat, insomnia, mood changes, weight gain, or fatigue. If you experience any unusual side effects, notify your doctor.
• Less serious side effects are more likely to occur. You may experience some redness, blistering, burning, itching, or peeling of the skin being treated. Continue to use Kenalog and talk to your doctor.
• Other local side effects may also occur, especially with prolonged use of Kenalog. These include thinning of the skin, prolonged redness, and stretch marks.
• Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

No doubt about it that Kenalog is a corticosteroid generic name triamcinolene So, as with any steroid you can use it for a while but I would not do so indefinately and be sure to wean off of it in stages replacing it with another therapy in order to avoid a flare
Here are some more Side Effects
Short-term side effects include:
Mood swings.
Nervousness.
Insomnia.
Weight gain.
Fluid retention.
Poor wound healing.
Increased risk of infection.
Long-term side effects include:
Glaucoma.
Muscle weakness.
Mood swings.
Stomach ulcers.
High blood pressure.
Osteoporosis.
Diabetes.
Cataracts.
Damage to the hip, shoulder, or knee joints.

Hi Yesi-
This past summer my derm injected my elbows with a one time shot of Kenalog. The scales there were extremely thick and not responding to the Enbrel and Mtx. It wasn't a short time later that all the scales were gone and the skin was smooth albeit a reddish purple color. To this day the scales have not come back and I only needed that one shot. I did not break out anywhere else or experience any other side effects. This skin is still discolored but I'll take that anyday over the bleeding, cracked and scaly skin that existed before.
Like anything else you must way the risk factors for yourself.
Good Luck and keep us up to date.

Im sorry to ask so many questions but right now I am so depressed that I am looking for anything that could help me. I am currently taking Dovonex mixed with Ultravate ointment but my skin is thinning out and I get tired off putting it on. It does work but I get tired of having to put it on 2 a day and it is driving me crazy because my clothes get stained and messed up.
I went to the Derm today and he applied the Kenalog on my right elbow he put like 10 to 15 shots I lost count because of the pain.
he also gave me a pamphlet(spelling?) on Soriatane and I feel like trying that.
Has anyone tried Soriatane?
I know the side effects. I already have a 6 yrs old son and I am not planning on having any more kids. Oh god What should i do. I would really appreciate any advice.

Yesi,
Please don't ever be sorry for asking questions, this is a great place to learn about others experiences and to vent. I hope that the shots will help you and someone will be along soon to answer your questions regarding soritane.
Hang in there,
Karen

Yesi,
I was diagnosed w/ guttate 18 yrs ago. My derm first gave me topicals for a few years and then started me on intralesional injections. This is where minute amounts of a corticosteriod, in this case Kenalog 10, is injected directly into the plaque right under the surface of the skin to slow cell turn over. I controlled my gp this way exclusively for over 10 yrs.. In fact, I went in the office to have it done for about 3 years, and with my medical background, my doctor said I could do I myself at home. I self injected for about another 6+ yrs.....(which I dont recommend unless you are a nurse, a NA, or other healthcare practicioner, as the amount injected has to be cafefully controlled).
The downside is the pain at the time of injections, and the possibility of skin thinning (which is the same with strong topicals). The up side is that you get injected and that site is either irradicated or gone for 12+weeks before it starts to reappear (as was the case for me, but everyone is different).
It's like anything else, you have to weigh the pros and cons and then decide if it is something for you. I wanted to interject here b/c a lot of the posts were addressing systemic steriod therapy (one large injection of a steriod into the behind that is supposed to treat the whole body as opposed to little injections into the site that just treat that specific area.) For me it worked like a charm for almost 18 years before I had to move to something else. And I still inject stubborn areas occassionally. My personal opinion...I would certainly take a look at this relatively benign option before plunging into systemic biologic therapy (Enbrel, Raptiva, etc.)
Good Luck to you, do your homework, and consider all your options.

Doctor was going to give me some of that on a couple of different occasions, however, my plaques were a little big and too many I guess. Never got it and now with my UVB therapy am very glad that I didn't. If you need it, only your doctor can give them so if you're happy with your derm and they recomend it, might be the right thing to do.
I wish you well.

My son had one intramuscular injection of Kennalog about five years ago. He said the injection was extremely painful. He had really bad side effects including severe mood swings and migraine headaches ( Said he totally understood PMS now) LOL. His severe plaque P cleared up within four days after he had the injection, but he had a severe flare about a month later that lasted three years.

I did sub-Q cortisone injections at my spots. They cleared very quickly and stayed away for three months. After that they came back the same as they were. There were no side effects and very little pain.
I am currently on Amevive (for the third time) and finally getting really clear. Each time I have seen more clearing, but this time the stubborn ones are also clearing.
Just some more info to throw into the mix.
SHANA
Thanks everyone for helping me out.
I took about 10 to 15 shots of the Kenelog on my right elbow which hurt like crap. I notice myself getting clear and I have no more plaque. I have noticed that ever since i tried the shots I have been very moody and cranky. I also have muscle pains especially on my right hip/thigh muscles. The bottom of my left foot hurts like crazy like if I stepped on a broken bottle. I have to drink motrin to move around because the pain is terrible. I decided not to try the kenelog again and search for something new. The Derm is telling me to look into Soriatane. I guess I am going to keep searching.
Thanks again.

Hi,
For several years I have had kennalog injections on my elbows with a great response. Typically I was plaque free for 6-9 months. This spring I used them again and had a huge rebound after about 2 weeks. My derm said we could try it again in the future. It was great while it lasted.
