Has anyone figured out how to remove those thick scalp flakes without pulling out tufts of hair? My scalp is much better and no longer feels like I'm wearing a tight hat, but I still get these flakes that come off with hair still attached.

Hi Beck,

There's someone who sometimes posts here that uses a metal flea comb to remove the scales from his scalp. I personally have never tried it, but he swears by it. Here's a link to the thread where he discusses it: http://www.psoriasis.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3492.

I hope this helps.

Mike

What a timely post! I have a what appears to me a huge missing patch of hair right on the top of my head.

I'll go read about the flea comb.

I've never had scalp psoriasis before but seeing that big old bald spot shocked me!

It's really not that easy especially if you have long hair. One product that people have success with is Baker's P&S liquid, which is an OTC scale remover for the scalp. The main ingredient is salicylic acid. You can see the product here. (http://www.dermstore.com/product_P%26S+Liquid_1013.htm)

Baker's also makes a shampoo that can be seen here. (http://www.dermstore.com/product_P%26S+Shampoo_1015.htm) The sampoo is probably not much different than T-sal from Neutrogena, which is easier to find at the local grocery store or drug store.

I use a plastic fine tooth comb used for babies. It has 2 sides, one is extremely fine, it will comb out even the tiniest flakes. I don't have too much of a problem with scalp p, but if there's flakes that's how I get them out. It's also nice to carry in your purse so if you're out and about and notice a flake showing you can easily pull it out. I would try babies r us.

Thanks for the links, etc. I might try the salycic acid liquid. The main problem is not removing the flakes, but removing them without pulling out alot of hair. I think the tar-based medications and shampoos make me itch more and cause more tightness.
