I just wanted to share my opinion about this problem of pilonidal sinuses/cysts and why I think psoriasis sufferers are more likely to get them.
I got my cyst after using Dovonex cream long-term. It seemed to get bigger and smaller on a weekly/monthly basis, which I think now was related to how much and how often I was using the Dovonex cream.
I was eventually told it was a pilonidal cyst....but I have now seen all my medical notes....and the Dermatologists, and even the surgeon didn't know what it was at first...he did eventually say it was a pilonidal cyst though.
I had major problems with Dovonex and I got lots of other cysts too whie using it...I don't know if this was deposits of calcium from the vitamin d overdose..or deposits of the cream itself.
Once I stopped using the Dovonex the biggest cyst I had (size of 2 grapes) gradually re-absorbed and all that is left is a pin-prick little lump.
I haven't had any other cysts/sub-skin boils since I stopped using the Dovonex.
I did some research and found out that Dovonex is known to cause a condition called Foliculitis, which I think is similar to these cysts..but I'm not sure.
One thing I am sure of is that Dovonex caused my cysts..and many other side-effects like bone/muscle weakness and palpitations etc..and worsening of the psoriasis/facial p.
I just wanted to say this because I think we are often left in the dark about what happens when our bodies absorb all the creams we rub into them...I don't think we're told the half of it.
Also I think pilonidal sinuses are more often open/productive boils/cysts which gradually get worse as the hair which causes them grows further into the skin...I'm sure mine wasn't a 'normal' pilonidal sinus.
'Pilonidal' means 'hair nest'...so if you're using Dovonex and the cyst gets smaller when you don't use it...it may not be an in-growing hair...it may be a deposit from the cream.
I also think that the earlier generations of Vitamn D analogues were even more renowned for causing these cysts.
All the best, rockstone ;)
