I saw a website called beatpsoriasis.com that sells UVB equipment like the dermalight 80 and others without a prescription and the price is the same as buying one from a domestic supplier. Has anyone ordered anything from this company out of Austraila?

I have a feeling that this is not the same product that is manufactured by National Biological Corporation. I really don't know how they can sell a prescription product without a prescription and that is throwing up a red flag for me. Even if prescriptions are not necessary on Australia it would still be illegal for them to sell the products to US customers without a prescription. If the prices are the same then I would just go with the reputable companies here and find a doc that will write an Rx.

The units sold without prescriptions are UVB lights sold for pet supplies and not the strength you need to treat Psoriasis. Don't be fooled.

Before I purchased my unit from Daavlin, I emailed the company in Australia that is selling these units. They never bothered to answer my email. I would be suspicious of that. I have talked to and emailed both Daavlin and National Biologics - they were both extremely professional and helpful. Maybe you could call them and ask about it?

It looks like the same unit, but maybe someone different who is selling it? This is the eBay site for the person that I emailed who never answered http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180000676363&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3AAAQ%3AUS%3A1&rd=1
The website states "The dermalight80 (sometimes mistaken for the Handisol in the USA...."

Even if it is the same product, it's more expensive. I paid $468 for mine which I bought from Davlin with a dr's Rx, no tax, no shipping. If you have insurance, most likely part or all will be covered as well.

So what, exactly, is the big deal about having to get a prescription?

I'm not sure I understand your question. What's the big deal? Well, in the USA you have to have a prescription to get a home phototherepy unit. OK, that's one answere. The other answere is, maybe someone can't get a prescription. My derm almost didn't give me one because he wanted my son to be ready for maintenence before we got a scrip. The thrice weekly trip after school to get treatment was too much for my family to bear, and to wait for maintenence would have been horrible. We'd still be waiting! Luckily, I didn't have to fight or argue. I just had to ask twice. The other issue was, would he give me a scrip for the unit I wanted? I wanted a UVA/NBUVB combo unit. He's a PUVA guy. Luckily, no argument there. So I guess to go outside the US without a prescription would be an option for anyone who can't get a scrip or for someone who can't get a scrip for the UV they want.
I am looking overseas for a Dermalight also, however the voltage is different. I wondered if converting it down from 220 to 110 would affect its effectiveness?
Also, the problem getting a prescription for me is that my husband's been laid off and we don't have insurance, so we'd have to pay to go to a doc and then hope for one amenable to this specific treatment.
