View Full Version : what's wrong with milk?

I see alot of people here saying that dairy products, including milk, should be avoided when looking for foods to eliminate to help the body get back in balance. I, like a lot of other people, I'm sure, have been eating cereal for a looooong time. I'm not too happy that I would have to give it up. If I used organic milk, would that be better and "less toxic" than non-organic?
Or, if I have to give up milk totally, has anybody used these other milks on their cereals, and how does it taste? Yes, i've already made the change to organic cereals. I don't eat the non-organic cereals anymore.
Thanks,
Eric

I don't have a lot of information for you, but I too LOVED my cereal in the a.m. (and before bed), a glass of milk with dinner....sigh...but am lactose intolerant (in that I get gas that others have trouble tolerating! and a yucky tummy if I have a lot). Further, I noticed a few years ago, when p was acting up on my face where it's usually not too bad, when I cut out dairy my face was back to normal less than a week later.
Different things are triggers for different people, but milk does seem a common culprit. Rice milk is ok tasting - Silk (soy) is ok but kinda thick/sweet to me - they have a 'lite' product now that might be better but haven't tried it - I started by doing part regular milk and part soy or rice, and then graduated to only soy or rice. But our tastebuds can get used to the difference, if we introduce the food often enough. (truth - for me, I just rarely do cereal anymore) Could be sad about it, but my breakfasts are healthier now - oatmeal, eggs, fruit. After a while you don't get bummed out about it when you start to really equate the food with the rotten consequences.
Just my experience/opionion - hope someone will come around with more info!

I haven't personally noticed any detrimental effecs from taking dairy products and in fact have encountered good plaque clearance while taking cereals and milk as a snack daily.
I think there are two potential problems when considering aggravation of the P and a link with dairy products.
Firstly there is a sugar in milk called 'lactose' which is broken down in the gut by an enzyme called 'lactase'.
This enzyme can be depleted due to sickness or diarrhea, but can be built up again by the re-introduction of the dairy products slowly.
Secondly you may have an actual allergy to the proteins in the milk, which I think is much rarer so it is unlikely that you will have that.
I think the best idea would be to take dairy products of good quality or organic, but don't compromise that with very artificial or sugary cereals, maybe stick to oats etc...which are also very good for the skin.
All the best :)
