Hello,
I just started on 10mg of MTX and we are looking at starting a family. Has anyone been taking MTX as the father and conceived? Is it imperative to stop MTX even from the male perspective when trying to conceive? Your thoughts are much appreciated. Take care.

hi

it is recommended that you stop mtx 6mths prior to trying to conceive. so you must ask your rheumy for advice on this.

From the ACR.

http://www.rheumatology.org/publications/guidelines/ra-drug/table2.asp

Methotrexate X No data Spontaneous abortion Fetal abnormalities (including cleft palate and hydrocephalus) Contraindicated; small amounts excreted with potential to accumulate in fetal tissues Females: infrequent long-term effect;

males: reversible oligospermia

From the NPF;

To be absolutely safe, women should generally avoid the use of internal prescription medications (those taken by mouth or injection) for psoriasis when trying to conceive a child.

Men should avoid internal medications as well.

Hope this helps. I'm with Tracey ask your rheumy & have your wife talk to her ob/gyn.

My Dr also said that males should stop using MTX 6 months prior to trying and for women.... don't even think about it.
