Hi, everybody, it's been a while since I've been on the boards. But I'm wondering if anybody else has been recently diagnosed with PRP (pitylriasis rubra pilaris). I really could use the understanding of another person with this condition. It's related to psoriasis, but different.
Thank you for any help anybody might be able to provide.

Hi Eric,
Wow, the pictures I found certainly would make one think they have psoriasis. It looks so painful. I see it is treated with Soriatane or if that doesn't work...Methotrexate. Along with looking like psoriasis it also has that dreaded erythrodermic red look.
The telling tale is that the hair follicles are loaded with keratin besides the patches and show a red dotted effect.
What treatment have you been given? At least you have been diagnosed properly. Good luck with it. Keep us posted.

Hi Eric,
My husband has been diagnosed with both e-dermic P and prp. Both came on in the past year as a result of a bad strep infection. He was treated with cyclosproine first then switch to MTX (methotrexate). The MTX did little to help the prp, so his derm switched him to Soriatane. He was unable to tolerate the Soriatane (extremely dry lips, scalp, excessive flaking all over, tiredness, extreme itching, etc.) but it did temporarily relieve the prp. However, because of the side effects, he went back to the MTX. The prp hasn't been as much of an issue since then. He has some slight problems with the backs of his arms, but it is _nothing_ compared to his e-dermic right now.
His derm did say (and this was confirmed by a second opinion) that prp is often temporary. It will flare for several months to a couple of years, but almost always goes away with some sort of treatment. We'll see...
Hope this is helpful.

Leah, sorry to hear about your husband's e-dermic. I'm glad that his prp has settled down some, if that's any consolation.
Juanita, the derms at Mayo Clinic want me to try high doses of Soriatane, maybe as high as 75 mg a day. Currently, I'm working my way up to that. Now i'm on 25 mg a day and in 2 weeks, they want to bump it up to 50 to see how that goes. They tell me to take oil baths for 30 mins daily to help with the moisturization and also i'm doing wet dressings for the next several days to help with the moisturization.
Do you know anything in particular regarding prp?
thanks,
Eric
