My derm perscribed me Taclonex last week as kind of a last ditch effort before light therapy (I'm a redhead, burn very easily, that's why it's a last resort)

Enbrel failed, clobex failed, several other topicals had minimal results

well, I've been using Taclonex for exactly 1 week now, and all I can really say is wow, it's worked wonders for me when nothing else really did.

I can't begin to state how happy I am about this, and I'm sure my derm will be excited. She had never perscribed it to anyone because of cost, but I have good insurance, and the makers of it provide a 35 dollar rebate (even if you only paid like 40 dollars for your copay), so basically I got it for 5 dollars.

My flaky, bleeding, messed up arms look normal again and I can ditch the long sleeve shirts (after 1 week all that remains are slightly pink areas where big leisions once were.

Finally nice to find something that really has worked for me

Jillian,,,,it is calcipotriene and bethamethasone mixed together. I asked my derm if I could try it,,,,,,,it is not for pppp, which I have. He said it would not hurt to give it a try. It did not help as much as Clobetasol,,,for me,,,,

Very spendy, but I have good insurance.

YAY you!!! So glad you found something that works! It worked ok for me too, but my co-pay was like $105. (Just a leetle too rich for me, as I would go through a tube in a week with all the spots I had.) Hope it keeps doing great for you!

Taclonex is a combination of calcipotriene (Dovonex) and betamethasone dipropionate. Betamethasone dipropionate is a Class 1 or Super Potent Steroid. Steroids are grouped -- by strength -- into 7 different groups or classes. Each class is assigned a number. The lower the number, the stronger the steroid. Most derms limit the use of the stronger steroids to either two weeks max or to the weekends only. That's to prevent side effects such as skin thinning and cushing's syndrome. Here's a link the the NPF's steroid classification chart: http://www.psoriasis.org/treatment/psoriasis/steroids/potency.php. Here's a link to some additional information about Taclonex: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic4/taclonex.htm.

Taclonex's website says: You should not use Taclonex® Ointment if you have a history of allergy to any of its components; higher than normal levels of calcium in your blood; or erythrodermic, exfoliative, or pustular psoriasis.Source: http://www.taclonex.com/html/FAQs.php.

Taclonex is sold outside of the United States as Daivobet®/Dovobet®.http://www.taclonex.com/html/abouttac.php

Dovobet has been available in Europe for a number of years. Dovobet was mentioned here in posts dating from 2002: http://www.psoriasis.org/forum/showthread.php?p=13198&highlight=Dovobet#post13198 and http://www.psoriasis.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2729&highlight=Dovobet. Taclonex was approved by the FDA in early 2006: http://www.psoriasis.org/news/stories/2006/20060111_taclonex.php.

I hope this helps.

Sounds promising if used sparingly... Does anyone know if it's in the works to provide this in cream or solution form. My worst P is on my scalp so the solution form works the best for me. Regardless, it's always great to hear a success story- especially after only 1 week. Congrats!

Taclonex is a combination of calcipotriene (Dovonex) and betamethasone dipropionate. Betamethasone dipropionate is a Class 1 or Super Potent Steroid. So Dovonex and a super potent topical steroid. Of course it would work but only if you continue to use it, which can't be for long term use, due to the super potent steroid. I'm sure the same results would happen with just using the steroid alone. We all know steroids work, until the body stops reacting and a stronger steroid is needed. And not for long term use. Then when you are at the end of the top end steroids, what next? My point is steroids should be used with much caution and limited use if you want them to continue to be effective.

I've been on clobex and several other steroids before, none worked nearly as well.

I'm aware of the long term problems associated with use of the product, but I'm using it once daily to get everything hammered down, then after 3 weeks or so my derm is having me move to 3 times a week, then even less than that if we can keep it down, with breaks inbetween treatments

I'm just happy to find SOMETHING that finally has knocked out the big lesions on my forarms and elbows (it hasn't done quite as much good on my hands)

More importantly though, it immediately put a halt to the sizeable patches I was developing on my scalp, which worried me more than anything

I have been using Talconex as well, and I do find it to have a positive effect on the patches. However, I have had a history of kidney stones that have developed after I was being prescribed topical ointments (due to the calcium they contribute to your bloodstream). SO, I would be careful, but nonetheless, thats great that it is working for you.

Luckily with my insurance the copay was $45. and I didnt know about the website rebate! Thanks!

I am also in my 5th week of phototherapy...still awaiting results, b/c I just reached therapeutic levels, but i myself have fair skin and did not find myself susceptile to burning.

I am curious, how often you are using the ointment?

Mike I just read your post.

I was also Rx’ed Taclonex for a couple stubborn spots on my shins. At first I said no because I was a bit uncomfortable with using any topical steroid (been there, had the rebound flares, not going there again!). My Derm. explained to me that it was dovonex mixed with a mid-potency steroid and if used as directed (once a day for 4 weeks then once a day two time a week) that I should be fine.

If you look up betamethasone dipropionate it is actually listed in several different categories of potency. (CLASS 1 – Super potent), (CLASS 2 – Potent), (CLASS 3 - Upper Mid-Strength) and (CLASS 5 - Lower Mid-Strength).

I did use it everyday for the first 4 weeks and it did work pretty well, but I did not follow through with the two day a week regiment. I did not have a rebound flare and the spots have remained in pretty good shape from when I stopped using it (several weeks ago).

So I guess the point here is that betamethasone dipropionate seems to come in different potencies and to the best of my knowledge, Taclonex does not contain the super potent strength.

I just started using Taclonex about a week ago. The Clobetasol was not working well any more. The Taclonex seems to be working. I think I'll need more time. My Derm gave me a bag of samples to use so I could judge if I wanted to continue with it (high co-pay.) Also just started with the Olux. Stuff is working great and is so easy to use (scalp.)

thanks!

I'm rubbing in small amounts of taclonex (what I use on every other patch)

I just have to pull my hair to the side so I can get a good of a view of the patch as possible, then rub in a small amount of it

I haven't lost any hair from it, it's gotten rid of the patches, and my derm assured me it was perfectly ok to use

can't even see the spots now on my scalp, and I have my hair cut very short

All the shampoo's I ever used were expensive, and didn't work well

if I'm careful, I don't get any greasy spots in my hair either

just remember the website, 35 dollars off your copay is one of the better rebates I've seen on meds I've been using. Makes it cheaper even than generic steroid creams fo rme (40 dollar copay)

But I'm just kind of posting a followup

it's now officially been about 10 days I've been on it (perscribed 2 weeks from this coming thursday)

and my arm patches are just smooth, non raised, light pink spots that you can't even tell are p

my scalp p spots above my ears, in my ears, and on top of my head are completely gone and I quit applying it to them, as I can't tell where they're at (the lesions weren't as thick on my head, the thickest (and oldest) were on my arms.

The spot on my bottom end (from butcrack top to mid/lower back, that was about the size of a volleyball (well, a tad smaller, but can't think of anything closer) is baby skin smooth now, and first time I haven't been digging at my lower back/crack in a long long long time

I'll make sure and keep people posted when I quit applying to spots if I flare at all, etc

I had a really nasty flare after I quit enbrel

I've used the Taclonex and I cry tears of happiness.. i got immediate result i could actually live my life.. unfortunetly the cost for me under my insurance is over the $400. my insurance doesn't cover it..my Doctor gave me all the samples he had but now he has me on Diprolene and Dovonex which is supposed to carry the same ingredients but it is useless. I did some research on the net and and in Canada it is named as Dovobet(R) and Europe: Daivolet(R). just in case others have insurance like mine that has not appoved the medication yet..you can find it for at least half the price.I plan on ordering some this week..
Also i had a really hard time going out with my P exposed I had it on my hands and feet. 15 years of not wearing sandles, not being in the pool and staying away from the beach because of embarressment..Anyway I went to Florida last month and for the first time went in the pool and on the beach..it was great...what was even better is the sea was really good for my skin that I actually bought SEA SALT when i got home and soaked my hands and feet in it every other night...my P is 70% gone.. It's time to start pulling out those strappy sandles..

If anyone has the opportunity, get your doctor to at least get you some Taclonex, even if it's samples and for what it's worth try the sea salt (very inexpensive).

Take Care.

I've been on Taclonex for 15 days now, once a day. It's working the best of any steroids I've been on for the past 2+ years. I was never good at a 2x a day schedule - way too messy to deal with in the morning, as I don't get up well and I usually only leave myself 20 minutes to get ready [ good thing i'm low maintenance! :D ] anyway, I look GREAT. I feel GREAT. Mostly all my spots are now flat and smooooooooth [i love how they feel] and just kind of white, so of course they don't blend in real well but a LOT better than my itchy, scaly, cracked, red spots. I'm doing this for one month, and then I'm going to go 2 times a week for maintenance. I'll let ya know how it continues to work for me.
