I had 2 epidural steroid shots into my lower back a year ago. Because the shots went into my spine, I was on bed rest the remainder of the day. My understanding of the shot you're getting is that, although uncomfortable, you shouldn't be laid up for any period of time. Have you checked with your doctor? Maybe even a call to his nurse would answer your questions. Good luck!

Tracey,
I've have had frequent injections into my sacroiliac joint as well as my hips and bursea in my hip area.
I was laid up for the rest of that day and was sore for a few days afterwards but the relief that I get is definately well worth it and I hope it is for you too. You can use ice & some type of pain medication after. I love cortisone shots and wish I could have them monthly! :D Sometimes that relief can last a very long time.
Wishing you comfort.
Karen
p.s. I also was sedated thru the proceedure as I had numerous places shot, you can ask about that as well.

I've had quite a few hip injections. The doctor should first inject something likke lidocaine to numbe the skin and joint lining - don't be afraid to insist they do this. This initial shot stings, but then you feel nothing. Next they thread a needle like an IV into the joint space and inject the cortisone into it. You might feel a little pressure.
You should get up carefully to est your weight on that side, as the lidocaine can make it feel "funny". They tell you to "take it easy" the rest of the day - for me, that means no exercise class until the next day, that's all.
Depending on how much swelling you have in the joint lining (synovium) you might be sore in the injection site for the next day or two, but it just feels like you exercised a little too much.
Don't be scared - this whole thing lasts less than 10 minutes from going into the dressing room to leaving, and you will feel much better pretty quickly, because the lidocaine will lessen the pain you have now. It's a good thing as Martha would say!
