Finally after several years I am starting to see my p on my scalp start to fade!!! So that means I can finally go to a salon and get my hair cut and highlighted like a normal 27 year old!! I have been to embarresed to go to a salon and have someone get grossed out by my scaley scalp, so I have had my boyfriend (he's not very good!!) cut my hair for the last couple of years or I have gone without. Part of me thinks that this is extremely vain of me and the other part of me thinks that I have a right to feel comfortable with someone messing with my tresses......so has anyone else experianced this or am I just being weird to be excited about something so trivial??
My other question is, I was recently put on MTX I take 3 2.5 mg on Mon and 3 2.5 mg on Tues. I havent had any side effects and have finished week one. So if I was gonna have side effects would I have had them right away after taking the pills or could they develop down the line??
Thanks for any and all help/ opinions!!

Hi Melement,
Welcome to the Board. Nice to meet you. I don't think your being vain at all. You're feelings are perfectly normal. Take me for example; I'll be 50 in December. I've had psoriasis since I was 7. I had REALLY bad scalp psoriasis when I was in college. That was back in the late 1970's. (I graduated in 1979.) Long hair was the style of the day for most guys, so I was able to get away with not getting a hair cut. I literally went for years without getting one. Then styles changed and short hair became the style of the day. Im also an accountant, so it's important that I maintain a "professional" appearance. Everyone also tells me that I look better in short hair. That being said, I sometimes go for as long as a year between haircuts. I'm that uncomfortable about someone touching my scalp. I still feel that way even though my scalp cleared spontaneously a couple of years ago. (Don't ask me how. I have no idea what I did. I'm able to maintain it by using a coal tar shampoo.)
Here's how I approach my "annual" haircut. (It makes things a little easier.) I try to go to the same barber ever time. I always remind him that I have psoriasis. (I have it it my ears so he has to notice.) If I see someone new, I let him or her know that I have psoriasis. Most people know what it is. I sometimes have to answer a few questions about it. (I've never had anyone make any negative comments about it. Even when my scalp was bad.) If you go to one of those places that requires an appointment, you can let the person who answers the phone know that you have psoriasis. That way they can alert the stylist.
I'm glad that your haven't experienced any side effects from MTX. Some people are able to stay on MTX without any problems. Other people have reported that they experience side effects from time to time. Hopefully, you'll be one of those people who never experience any side effects.
I hope this helps.
Good luck. Keep up posted. Let us know if you have any questions and please don't be a stranger.

Jeff (Designhair) and his wife own a hair salon in Memphis. He shared his thoughts about haircuts and psoriasis in this thread: http://www.psoriasis.org/forum/showthread.php?p=88748&highlight=Jeff#post88748.
I hope this helps.

This is just another thing I take for granted. To get excited about a haircut... I can't immagine. Please treat yourself well for this momentous occasion. ;) Go someplace nice and over priced where they will give you a scalp massage while they shampoo your hair (even if you have to pay extra). It's wonderful! If you say where you are, maybe someone could recommend someone. Trivial it is not! I'm very happy for you! :D

I found a great lady that was always so nice about my covered scalp. I felt completely comfortable going to her. I was just like you - until I found someone I could trust.

OMG, I know exactly how you feel. It's so embarrasing. I have found a wonderful woman who does my hair (BTW, I'm 24) and she is so awesome. She always comments on if she thinks it's looking better or different things that she may have heard of for me to try. I would NEVER go to the mall or something. She has a little shop with 2 other hair dressers and they are all super nice. I know at least 1 other person who goes there who has p (well, I don't know her, but they told me that one of their clients have it too).....it's probably way more common than we all think, but my advice is GO GET YOUR HAIR DID GIRL...... LOL....you deserve it......I always give a nice tip for being so helpful and of course having my hair look great (well as good as it's gonna get!!!) Keep us posted!
Good luck

Hi Melement and Welcome!
I'm a fellow Michigander, live near the Palace of Auburn Hills. I glad to hear that your scalp is improving!
I have a good friend who owns a hair salon in Royal Oak, and has a few clients who have P. She's really a nice person, and would be happy to talk to you or work with you. If you're interested, just reply here, or send me a PM, and I'll send you her contact info.
Again, welcome!!

Welcome & get your hair done girl.... I have had p since I was 13, so I have been to a few different salons... Okay, I admit - I have moved around a bit since I was 13 & I have been to ALOT of different salons. NONE, have ever been mean or rude about my scalp. I also - ALWAYS apporach it with "I have psoriasis. Coloring my scalp is not a bad thing, in fact it will make me less scaley for a few days"
It has been a few years since I lived in the Detroit area, but it sounds like Doug has a great lead on a salon in Royal Oak. Good Luck! If it doesn't work out, I can ask my SIL where she gets her hair done (but I think it is in Troy/Birm area which means $$$ )

I agree with the advice about using the same stylist. They see it all, and you wouldn't be the first person they have seen with p. Some are very very understanding. Just have to find the right person.
I know the following info does not help females, but for males, it is a catch 22. I have found the more hair you have, the worse the p gets. I remember getting a real short haircut, and my stylist said, "you sure you want it cut so short?". He was worried about the p showing through. Well, for me, the shorter my hair was, the less scalp p i had. So now i just shave it all off, and i haven't had a problem with scalp p since.

That bit about shaving your head. It makes you wonder. If I shaved my head...would the P go away?
I asked a derm years ago and she said NO. I might add I have waist length hair...but I was tempted.
I see so many folks with shaved heads these days and think...you wouldn't shave it if you had what I have. But maybe it is helpful for some folks?

WOW! I must have been going to the wrong places. I have had really bad experiences with getting haircuts. I used to get told things like ..."I'm really not suppossed to be cutting your hair with this but I will, just this once, for you." I've gotten that same thing said to me several times. I was so turned off that I became the queen of cutting my own hair. I am so grateful that my scalp is good now.
