I have the opp. to take a spot in Psoriasis reasearch and I was wondering how many of us on the board have done this? They provide medication (probably a research drug and a placibo) and transportation costs. I thought this would be great to help out and maybe hopefully be part of finding a cure, but then I think of, is there going to be any lasting side effects that may hinder the quality of my life if I particpate in this, I have 3 small children at home that need their mom, how dangerous is this???

Hi Betty,
I think you should consider all factors of the project, and pay close attention to the information provided by the researchers. I would also take into serious consideration the reputation of the hospital/school/group funding the project.
I have been involved in three clinical trials. The first one was back in the late 70's. It was a trial for PUVA and UVB, which are now extensively used, as you know. However, since there was minimal experience with UV therapy then, there were some side effects due to excessive exposure times.
The other two had to do with topical treatements, and the side effects were a non-issue in both cases. At this time in my life, I have decided not to participate in any more trials. I'll wait for the results, and then decided with my Dr if the treatment is something I should consider.
There are many advantages of participation, however. Not the least of which is access to medication which may be very helpful long before it becomes available to the general public. Enbril is a case in point.
Good luck with your decision.
