View Full Version : I improved my psoriasis by some eating changes

I recently read a book called Win the War Within (by Dr. Floyd Chilton, a professor at Wake Forest) which was about ways to decrease inflammation in your body. Knowing that psoriasis is an inflammatory disease, I tried some of the recommended changes in eating, and was elated to see a marked improvement in my lesions. The key is to reduce your intake of arachidonic acid, a chemical your body uses to make inflammatory molecules. In a nutshell, the eating changes are:
1. Eliminate liver, organ meats, fatty pork (sausage, ribs, hot dogs, etc), eggs, farm-raised salmon, lamb, veal, dark meat of poultry.
2. Eat no more than one 4 oz portion a day of some other meat: beef, lean pork, white meat of poultry, or catfish.
3. Eat as much as you want of other types of fish (including wild salmon), shellfish, milk products, vegetables, fruits, grains, and nuts.
4. Try not to eat a lot of processed carbs (sugar, white flour) at one sitting. Your body will secrete more insulin, which can promote inflammation.
5. If you are overweight, try to lose some weight, as obesity causes a chronic inflammatory state.
If you try this, I hope you will receive the same benefits as I have. Not a miracle cure - it helped me but I didn't clear up completely. I have been on cloud 9 for the past few months!

Hi Dottie,,,,welcome!
I have a book by Floyd Chilton called "Inflamation Nation" and it is interesting also.
I don't have a lot of self-control but try to follow a sensible diet.
There is a lot of info here in the Alternative forum.

Hi Dottie....sounds good ...I haven't read the book but have heard some good things about it....
our family is on a very strict eating plan (cause I'm the cook) however they do eat their share of goodies....DH does the inbetween shopping after I get my payday shopping done, which means he picks up stuff I wouldn't purchase :D
1-2] On the first no-no I only buy grass-fed beef (they also have organic hotdogs which I just tried and everyone liked them....also bratwurst organic style :p I didn't know how these would go over but they ate them and liked them (I have a picky bunch that cringes when they see LOW FAT on a product!
3] I've also been able to find wild caught salmon, orange roughy and other fish that aren't farmed in a cesspool!
4] I think all processed foods are not the best choice....if they are factory made...forget it....
4] Well I do need to lose some weight...I'm working on it!!! :D
I'm also practically clear! from following this plan and eliminating some known trigger foods....but I still have some scalp issues and some in the ear...maybe 95% clear....I'm working on 100% again!
Good post....hope you report back and join us!

Thanks for the post.
I managed to get completely clear, but had to go further than your comments on diet for a while before I got there.

Thanks for your replies -- I'm new here and didn't know what to expect. In fact, I joined the NPF just to pass on the word about the eating changes that helped me so much. Dr. Chilton also recommended two omega-3 oils - fish oil and borage oil - that inhibit arachidonic acid's conversion to inflammatory chemicals, but I didn't know if it was allowed to mention this. The elimination of these inflammatory foods is really very easy.
Now it's my turn to learn from your messages!

DottieD,
Oh yes. I agree completely with your list! However...I believe a big culprit is SUGAR.
It's everywhere! Sodas, process food of all types.
And you could not be more correct on the Omega-3's! Wild salmon (LOL at Sally's "farmed fish cesspool comment-sad but true)!
And I do beleive that fish oil, Borage oil, flax oil...all great Omega 3 sources! All part of Barney's formula...probably a big reason I cleared on that formula...full of Omega 3!

Hi! I am also doing a diet change that includes no wheat products and no dairy! It is too early to tell if there is an improvement and sometimes I am so tempted by pizza...but I succombed only once so far! But thanks for the info on arachidonic acid containing foods. I also take BORAGE OIL and fish oil and vit D plus ibuprufen (I am starting BJ's Barney's formula, see thread on that). Let me see say that on fish oil and borage oil alone (which I did 2 years ago for a few months) my P improved. The way I knew was that my face psoriasis was totally gone (I usually have bad face P), and also the skin of my face was plump well -hydrated and the wrinkles less apparent (I'm 51)!
Keep telling us how you progress!

I have looked at many of the dietary change recommendation threads and figured that I would starve to death if I went to them.
The one that Dottie posted is kind of what I ended up doing, going to more quality foods rather than eliminating classes of foods (ie. wild salmon or lean meats rather than farm raised fish or poor quality/fast food protiens).
One of the biggest problems has been finding things that dont contain high fructose corn syrup. I was amazed when I looked at the products that have it (cheap bread, hamburger buns, the list is endless). I have tried to find products that are free of it, including soda, as I dont drink coffee, but do like to have a pop with lunch. I like the soda's that are sweetened with natural cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup, still probalby not the best for me, but easier for the body to deal with.
I have cut way down on the number of meals that I eat at fast food places that have food with lots of additives and replaced them with comparibly priced meals at other places that give a more natural product (like going to the family owned taco place instead of the chain store).
I cant say that it has helped the psoriasis, but I definately notice a difference in overall health.

it's AMAZING what you learn when you start reading food labels. YIKES! Fat free ham for instance...i always bought it. That thing has a ingredient list as long as my forearm! I just thought it was HAM! hahaha!
