I happened upon a forum that had a thread called curly girl....I had never heard of this so pursued it (after I found out it wasn't for peolpe that had natural curly hair) I read through the forum and as I did I thought this sounds like something I could use....

in reading through it seems some of the guys are also trying this! so it's not for girls only!!! :D

I have felt for a long time that the shampoos I have used on my scalp, have not been that good for my hair.......my hair has gone from thick, healthy hair, to limp, thinning unhealthy hair......
some of the surprising things I read were...

no shampoo, comb or brush should be used!!! this perked my interest if for no other reason that it was not only unconventional but contradictory of everything we have been taught (think 100 brush strokes nightly)

One of the benefits is getting the scalpback to it's normal ph

someone asked for a short version of what curly girl protocol is

#1 -- You don't wash your hair with shampoo. People with wavy hair (as opposed to really curly) can wash theirs once or twice a week ONLY if they use a sulfate-free shampoo (no sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate) and then you're supposed to put conditioner on everything but roots and scalp FIRST to protect it from the shampoo while you wash your scalp. (Alba Botanicals has a line of 3 'fate-free shampoos at the health food store.)

most of the girls are not using any shampoo!

#2 -- You only use conditioners with no 'cones in them (no silicone, dimethicone, etc.) and no proteins. Now that I think about it, there probably shouldn't be any in the shampoo either. There's a link to a compilation of acceptable products on the other thread but I don't know how to link it for you. A couple I know of are Suave Naturals Lavender or Aloe. (But be careful, not all Suave Naturals are okay, particularly the "smoothie" varieties have proteins and are not.) Infusium Leave-In Conditioner was one many people preferred, but AFTER washing with conditioner.

#3 -- You only use gels and other hair products with no 'cones in them. Many Curly Girls use Fruit of the Earth clear aloe vera gel. Two others I found on the list that are easy to find are Aussie Tizz No Frizz and Aussie Dual Personality Gel (but not other Dual Personality products -- they have 'cones). Some people were making their own with boiling flax seeds, etc.

#4 -- You try to let your hair air dry if at all possible. When you can't, use a diffuser. Some people liked the microfiber towels. Some people came up with ways to wash at night and keep the curl in overnight.

#5 -- Many people were able to not even "wash" their hair each morning, but instead used a spray they made with water and a drop or two of lavender essential oil to "freshen" their curls to be scrunched back in. Some people mixed aloe gel and water, half and half for a spray gel and used that. There was a recommendation for people who seemed to get oily at the roots to use corn starch or another flour in those spots to soak up oil. Many people noticed their hair seem to get oilier in the first few days, but then it got better and they didn't experience the oiliness any more.

so I've been doing this for about a month....I had to really think this one out....no shampoo? instead you use conditioner to wash the hair...allowing the scalp to get back to it's natural oils....

and guess what...........???

MY HAIR IS CURLY! I have had straight hair all my life... I have learned to scrunch the hair, comb only with fingers, and allow to air dry!

there are several curly girl threads...here is one:

OK as of today I notice 61 readers of this post! did anyone try this?
I had learned long before I ever heard of curly girl to make my permanent last twice as long by after washing my hair, to scrunch it up with a gel....I usually used a hair gel but one time when I ran out I used aloe gel....it worked! at the time I didn;t know about NO 'POO.....after reading about what all is in the shampoos and going without since this first post....I have to say....curly....no itching.....the P is just about gone!!! which I think is because the scalp is getting back to it's natural ph levels.......I'm also for the past month been using "magnesium seaweed gel" for giving the hair and scalp some nourishment....this is what is in most shampoos:

Most over the counter shampoos use harsh surfactants, or detergents such as ammonium laurel (or laureth) sulfate, sodium laurel sulfate (SLS). SLS, often called a premium agent in soaps and shampoos, are used in personal-care products because they are very cheap. They were developed in Germany during WWII to replace soap when many things were in shortage. Sodium laurel sulfates were originally designed to clean floors and can be found in items like garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers, and car wash soaps. Sodium laurel sulfate is a strong degreaser that dries skin and hair, is irritating to the scalp, and may cause hair loss. It is used in many so-called "natural" cosmetics, but it is not natural. These are mostly petroleum derived. These ingredients can even be found in baby shampoo - a product advertised as gentle. Other surfactants that may be included: Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate (also known as polyethylene glycol), Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, Lauroamphoglycinate, PEG-150 Distearate, Sodium Laureth-13 Carboxylate, PPG-2 Hydroxyethyl Coco/Isostearamide, Glycol Monostearate, Cocamide DEA, Octylacrylamide/Acrylates/ Butylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Polyglyceryl-3 Distearate, Polysorbate 60 and many, many more.

Many shampoos also contain dimethicone, a silicone derivative, claiming that it seals in moisture. The only problem is that it also seals moisture out. If you use a shampoo which includes dimethicone, the above mentioned detergents will strip your hair and scalp of all their natural oils and moisture. The hair shafts and follicles in your scalp will then be sealed with silicone, virtually making conditioner worthless to your hair and scalp. As a result your hair will become dry and brittle and your scalp, dry and itchy.

and here is a site for vinegar rinsing!
