Hello all,
I have been dealing with patches on my legs for about 4 years. I get secondary rashes when I try to use ointments stronger than Lidex. Injections made things worse. I am dealing now with a moderate total body breakout that I can trace to a period of stress. I have an appointment soon and hope to begin a systemic- although I am not the best candidate.

I would like to offer the following. In a doctor's column in our local paper, it was reported that many of his readers had written to recommend Vick's VapoRub, used as an ointment, as a treatment for p. Since I was switching health plans and desperate until I could get an appointment, I tried this approach. The VapoRub has a wonderful consistency as a salve. I have found that, for the first time, my three large leg patches are showing areas of "normal skin"- unseen for several years. It has been slow but there is definite progress.

The first time I used Vick's, I had a slight stinging sensation on one patch which immediately passed. I find it very soothing. If I can get to it fast enough, Vick's will calm a maddening itch before I react. The well-known scent seems to pass quickly but I try to use the ointment well before going out.

I have also found that adding a small amount of Epsom Salt to bath water is helpful- although it can cause itching. I am always better the next morning if I do this at night- especially if I follow with the Vick's cream.

Hello and welcome this great forum, lots of caring members here that share their stories and try to help others. I myself suffer from really bad scalp PSO and just want to maintain it.

Best of luck to you.

Hi Vicki - Glad to hear from you and I wish you well.

For about 7 years the best "lotion" I found for my skin was one that had a creamy vaseline base. I think it's part of the Vaseline Intensive Care line, although the generic is sold at Wal-Mart. It's inexpensive and it's easier to apply without feeling so greasy than just plain vaseline. Perhaps the help from Vicks Vaporub is due to the vaseline-type base. If you don't care for the smell but are getting good results, you might try the creamy vaseline and see if it's just as good for you.

I finally got concerned about putting vaseline on my skin every day for so many years and asked my derm about it. She said she didn't know of any problems with using it that much, but in her opinion Ceptaphil was the best "ordinary" moisturizing lotion. So I switched and have had good results with that. (Wal-Mart has a generic of this too.) Hope this info helps.
