Everyone might already know this technique but I thought I would add my 2 cents... After I apply my topical medication to my skin (legs) I do not want it rubbed off. Staining my clothes bed etc.. If you apply a pice of plastic wrap around the effected area (after applying that greasy medicine) tape it with scotch tape so it stays put. You will be amazed @ how much better your skin will be in the morning. A doctor told my Mother to do this years ago and it helps so much. You can wrap your arms stomach back whatever.. Hope it helps! It keeps your bed & clothes nice & clean of topical medications. :)

You should never practice this (occlusion) with steroids tho ;)

I just received a pamphlet from the NPF and it talks about occluding while using topical steroids. It says it's okay with the approval of your doctor, but you should avoid it with some steroids since they're too strong.

This is true steroids can be very harsh on your skin. They can thin the skin so you have to ask Doc. and of course follow his/her instructions..

I noticed that when I put on my knee socks after applying topical meds, my skin seems to do so much better. I figured it was because the socks keep the topical from rubbing off. Therefore, it stays on my skin longer to do its job.

It is more the fact that occlusion dramatically increases the absorbtion level of steroid in to the blood stream rather than a side effect like skin thinning.

Yea- getting in the blood stream sounds a lot more scary then just the skin becoming thin. Although my doctor never mentioned that point.

That sounds fine for small areas, but folks like me that have widespread P on every part of the body should be careful about this. You can disprupt you body's ability to cool itself in doing things like this (sweat not evaporating, etc) and end up with heatstroke.

Just my .02.

Ask your derm first before doing this.

This, along with the skin being thin, are the main reasons you are advised not to use steroids in skin fold areas like the groin, armpits, under boobs etc as these areas occlude naturally.

Sadly GP's never mention everything that they should when it comes to all things P.

I don't know about heat stroke.?? I have had large areas that I wrapped and it worked great. I am sure it got sweaty but the rest of my body was not over heating.. The key is to make sure the medication is safe to do this treatment. And yes I agree ask Doc for final confirmation.~
