I've been diagnosed with PA about five years ago and been taking MTX for about three. Results have been good until recently. Hurt my left foot walking the dogs back in August. Felt I broke a meta-tarsal. Got better. Rheumy said he felt some heat and swelling but we expected improvement -- and got it. Today -- out of the blue -- intense pain. Hurts in the foot. Hurts in the ankle joint. Hurts to walk. Hurts not to walk. What's up with this? PA flare? MTX not doing the job? Or something else? fred

PA flare? I believe we can flare thru anything, the good thing with MTX is that you can push it up to achieve the proper response and lower it as well.
Probably staying off your foot is a good idea and putting a call into your rheumy to let him know " it's baaaaaaaack "...
Hope you feel better soon.

Karen: Thanks. Didn't know we could push MTX up and down. Hoping tomorrow is better but will call rheumy. Fred

NP fred I know foot/ankle pain I was going to suggest asking about a cortisone shot but they are not usually done in the ankle area for fear of an achilles rupture.
I think that the highest dose of MTX is around 20 something mgs, I might be off a bit on that...but I do know those who adjust according to how they are doing every few months.
I've had PA in my feet many a time and the ankle so I can understand that it makes it difficult to get about and how much it hurts, I told my rheumy I should walk on my hands..only its in my hands too!
Let us know what your doctor says.

fred unfortuantely pa stomps on our feet which hobbles our ankles and then it kicks us in the knees. Then eventually it gets the rest of the joints in it's spare time.
my feet hurt everyday and so do the ankle and knees, etc. it's a crap shoot!
karen you are just a wonderful person and you give such kind and caring advice. I want to say thanks for all of your support and love you give to all of us

Fred, I hope you are feeling some better this evening and you get all the answers you need. This is a wonderful neighborhood, or at least that's how I think of it. Hey, Wisteria Lane has nothing on us, huh. ;) My bff.
Love & Prayers,

Nothing on us at all my friend. I think that we should be called Desperate PsAers. Desperate for a cure or sumpin like it.

Sometimes injuries and PA flare in bad weather. Is it raining, snowing? Barometric pressure falling? This could be the reason. Warmth warmth and mopre warmth!

Re
Desperate PsAers - kinda sounds like a bowling team. Wow that would be a real hoot.

Arthritis in the foot can be amazingly painful. I had to go to the ER with it (thought I had broken a bone). Nothing was broken, but the pain was extreme.

Back in May I fell down my basement stairs. It would have been funny if it hadn't hurt so much...Actually it was kinda funny anyway. I made the disastrous decision to go down the stairs (doing laundry) wearing flip flops. The one came off and I went down 22 steps on my butt...just kept scootin' down like a cartoon character. I fractured my tail bone (coccyx) and had a tiny sliver break off. Talk about pain!!! I couldn't move, sitting was soooooo painful, driving, a nightmare. It is mostly ok now, but when I drive long distance (more than 45 min) I really feel it in my butt. W/in a week of doing that I could feel the flare coming. I had to double my pain meds for a while and did remicade every 5 weeks (normally 7 weeks).
It just reminds me that I/we have to be more careful than most.

Nyoki!, I posted a reply in another message! OMG, I tripped on the basement stairs, broke my collar bone (never had a broken bone in my life). I have not been the same since (I am stoic, believe me). Pain in so many joints not affected by the fall and break, fatigue. What I'm thinking is our immune systems are out of wack, so any injury to bones or whatever just increases the problem.
We need so much more study about this problem.

Thanks to all for the feedback. Pain in my foot subsided, thankfully. Left with some residual soreness. Rheumy concerned but not alarmed. Attributed this episode to a flare, problably related to August injury. Upped the NSAID. Will discuss other options: increase MTX, different NSAID, change durg protocol in a couple weeks during regularly scheduled appointment.

OH FRED can I relate!!
I have had PA for 10 years, one foot, scalp but was pretty much under control with Nsaids then 6 months ago I slammed my baby toe into a dresser and went down HARD. SO I broke the baby toe, no biggie SO I THOUGHT. It has put my whole body in trama mode and I'm in pain 24/7.
We just have to be careful with everything since our immune system is so compromised.
Good luck!
