View Full Version : looking for adaptive kitchen tools

I am a self proclaimed 'foodie' who loves to spend time in the kitchen. With my recent dx of PA and flare that just won't quit (though I have gone from 33 to 14 inflamed joints - progress!), many kitchen and cooking tasks seem beyond my reach right now, due to having much pain and no strength in my shoulders, wrists, hands and fingers. We won't even talk about the other joints...

Where might I look for adaptive kitchen tools to make life easier? Things like opening jars and other containers with a variety of lid sizes, pop top containers (canned cat food), lifting items that are "heavy" (relatively speaking), etc.

As always, deepest thanks for all your help.

This was in the PATH literature. Hope it helps. I don't really do cook lol I believe it's an art-form though!

I use to hate to ask for help, somewhere in my brain that was admitting defeat or something I dont know, anyway now I ask if I need it which would include lifting anything heavy.

Someone will come along with more ideas for you.

PA can be such a monster...Hope that you feel better soon.

I recently bought a multi-opener from Amazon for the office so I wouldn't have to ask people to open bottles for me.

http://www.amazon.com/Progressive-GT-2950-International-Multi-Opener/dp/B0008D7GO2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1195144496&sr=1-1

Once I got it, I really liked it and ordered one for home. Now, I might get a third one to keep in the car.

The link ouchyk posted has some interesting stuff. It looks like they have thought of everything!

I saw some really neat kitchen tools on QVC and they are quite reasonable. I need to order some for myself. There are several sets on this page so scroll down to the latter part. Hope this helps.

Oh heck....when I went back to it it was generalized. So in the search part type in kitchen tools and it will come up.

Try www.arthritissupplies.com

They have all kinds of things. I don't know how the selection compares to other places, as I haven't explored other sites. I was looking for specific things for my 15 year old and knew I could get them there.

I love to cook too. I used to have a catering business. Oh well. I use things from different sites that I searched for but my biggest friend is the slow cooker. I have several from my catering days. You can make appetizers to desserts. The prep stuff. I try to do as mush and freeze as much so I wll have it for later. Will send some links later.

I bought one of those "good grips" can openers and I couldn't live without it. Helps if you've got P on your hands.

Does anyone know of a place that sells a tool to make it easier to open the gas tank of a car? I have noticed recently that it is getting harder and harder for me to open it.

www.arthritissupplies.com has a couple of things designed to help with gas caps. They are in the "around the house" section. I don't know anything about those products, but saw them in the catalog that came with my daughter's things.

thank you everyone!

Your suggestions were awesome. I have found the item I needed the most as of right now (something to open jars and lids), and am making a list (sadly) of what else may become necessary.

Again, thank you all.

When my husband was away, I decided to make spaghetti. I cooked the pasta and then went to open the jar of sauce...and couldn't. I tried running it under hot water, using that rubber jar opener thingy, using a knife, banging it on the counter, etc., with no luck. So...I had cooked pasta with just some olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper instead. When my husband returned 2 days later, he immediately went out and bought me the Black and Decker jar opener. I love it! :)

What I'm looking for is something that helps me pour a full gallon bottle of milk.

If I drank milk I would probably buy it in the half gallon or even quart bottles, it might be a tad more expensive but at least half of it wouldn't end up on the floor. :)

Oxo makes some great things with larger handles developed for those with arthritis for ease of use (Veggie peelers, hand held can openers, utensils, etc). Black and Decker makes a completely automated can opener, that I haven't tried, but looks like it might be good. Take a walk through Bed Bath and Beyond's kitchen section, or do a search on amazon for Oxo.

I saw a commercial for "Ove Mitts" today, that is basically a big glove with silicone ribs for gripping and is insulated enough for oven mitts. It might help getting things in and out of the oven.

OXO makes the best rubber handled things! This is basically all I own. This is the type of stuff my DH buys me for Xmas-Im a gadget person...I don't want jewelry..I want gadgets (alright call me crazy), but like you I enjoy cooking when Im feeling well.

One really really neat gadget I just found. It's on the shelf at the store for "As seen on TV commercials". It's called BONSAI.

I love fench fries, I have a huge deep fryer. My family could eat them by the dozen. I also have big problems chopping potatos (I use my OXO peeler to peel) and veggies (i.e. bell peppers, onions, etc).

This thing is really neat. You put the potato on the grid like razor and push the handle down (with a little bit of mucsle-not alot), and Wella! Perfectly cut fries, etc. (Polly and Rich I think you were here the night I got it and used it right????)

ANYWAY...I paid 19.99 for it. I love it. It comes with three different grid razors and two plastic containers to slip inside to catch the food. Best 20 bucks I ever spent!

Me and the slow cooker are on a first name basis. His is "Fernando". My husband calls him my "latin lover". I make everything and anything in mine. DH like the 16 bean soup I make with Sausage and veggies, I make stroganoff in it, he makes his Texas style Chilli in it. The days when I know Im losing speed and am headed for a crash, I will start it early...throw all the stuff in, this way when 4pm rolls around and I cannot get out of the chair, Dinner is already done!!!!!

The Oxo tools are great. The best thing I've found for opening jars is actually a silicone hotplate/potholder. It grips much better than I can.

I know that The Pampered Chef sells a great jar opener. I just used mine for the first time and I loved it.

I hate that I am going to have to make accomodations for this thing

My gas cap opener arrived last week. I went to try it out on my car at the gas station. It didn't fit! I contacted the company but they don't have a great return policy. I have to pay for return shipping and they won't refund the original shipping charges. They offered to exchange with another one that should fit my car (which was not advertised on their site) but I would have to pay for more shipping charges. No thank you. Just wanted to give folks a heads up if they order from these guys.
