View Full Version : Perhaps a Pin?

I have had P for only about 2 years...I am 67 years old and find it funny getting it this late in life...I am doing phototherapy and it is working quite well...I was wondering about a pin for us...It could make money for the NPF and I would be proud to wear one...Maybe the NPF could run a contest for the design of it...My thoughts were a heartshape gold pin with red enamel on it...A white H on one side and a white P on the other side, then in the middle of the heart a broken line...more of a zigzag...meaning Heartbreak of Psoriasis...then support the NPF...Does anyone like this idea? I think it would be nice to see the pin on someone and give a smile or nod...saying 'I understand'
Thanks, Molly

I think that this is an excellent idea! I'm 46 and I've had P since I was 7. I used to think that I was the only one in the world who suffered with this affliction. I used to feel so alone. I now know better. It would be nice, especially for the younger generation, to be able to spot a fellow traveler on this difficult road that every sufferer of P must follow.

Sorry to be the only wet blanket, but it was my understanding that the phrase "heartbreak of psoriasis" was offensive to many NPF members. It's not to me, but I'm not easily offended.

Dear Members,
Thank you for your taking the time to let us know how you would feel about a psoriasis pin.
You will be glad to know that we are taking the idea under serious consideration. It's a great idea!
We will keep you updated on our progress with the pin idea. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and feelings with us.

The pin is a great idea. While I'm not offended by the phrase "the heartbreak of psoriasis" it would pay homage to one of the most stupid commercials ever....(right up there with "help I've fallen and I can't get up")
I think the complaint to it was that commerical sort of minimalized the true frustrations and suffering that those of us with it encounter.
But yeah I'd wear a pin.

The pin is a great idea! I would were one for my Ian who at 1 yrs old would just try to eat it. My only problem is that the one described sounds so depressing. How about something more up beat? Maybe just the heart with a P in the center. Sorry guys I am not a real creative person. Any other ideas???

I'm also not a very creative person, but I think that a contest, similar to a poster contest, would be a great idea. Especially if we can involve our young people.

I totally agree on a pin. I am 35 and I have had P since I was 6 and PS since 28. I would get one for everyone in my family. I have been blessed for my family support and helps me with everything because of this effliction I am bedbound. I would be proud to wear the pin!!!

Well I thought I'd take the liberty and fool around with a concept in Photoshop, so here goes:
http://www.eds.gamer.net.nz/thaedes/ppin.jpg
I'll probably keep working with concepts for it, so check in on this thread from time to time if your interested in taking a look at them.
Some times my links don't work, so I'll try to upload the picture to a variety of sites in order to keep'em from going down.
I hope the NPF seriously considers making pins, that would be great. :D
[Edit note: turns out Geocities doesn't allow link leeching, so I had to post the pic to another web site.]

I'd consider making the pin with the foundations logo, but its trademarked so I can't reproduce it without legal issues. I'm sure however the NPF can possibly come up with a pin as well.
I'm still workin on another variation, hehe, but I've been to busy to spend any time on photoshop to create another one.

Dear message board participants~
Thank you for sharing your excitement with us about the possibility of a Psoriasis Foundation pin! We agree that it is an excellent idea, and are in the process of figuring out exactly how to go about making the idea come to life.
Rest assured that as soon as we have a plan set in stone, you will be the first to know. In the meantime, all suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Love the idea. It should be a contest sent out in the bulliten so that everyone who isn't computer savvy can find out about it and give it a shot too. Getting the younger kids involved would be great. It would give people a chance to get even more involved.
Maybe a childs pin and an adult pin version? just an idea. I'd be more than happy to join Thaedes in the photoshop realm and come up with some interesting stuff.

This is such a great idea!
There are pins for everything. I've got 2 or three of my own, for me and my family.
I seriously think we should have a contest!
I'm not at all offended by "heartbreak," but it sounds so... terminal. Like we're going to die!
*grin*
I'd say a heart is a really great idea, though, because it takes a pretty tough one to realise that while it might fade, it's going to come back.
I'll play with Photoshop, too, in the next few days. Maybe I can come up with something. Although I really like the one already posted.

Note from the Psoriasis Foundation Member Services Coordinator:
Hi Molly!
I appreciate you bringing this up again.
The Foundation is still undecided on this endeavor, due to the financial impact of making it happen. We would have to spend the time to find a sponsor willing to pay for it, etc.
Therefore, as of today, there is not a pin in the works. However, it is has not been dropped from our list of potential ideas.
You all will be the first to know if we decide to move forward with this idea.
Thanks!

This whole thread happened before my time ...in fact some of the people posting I've never heard of.....
BUT.................... it caught my interest and I'm wondering how many of the current posters would be interested now....?
If so.....perhaps, rather than looking for a sponsor, we could be our own sponsors by pre-paying and raising enough money to get the ball rolling.....is that a possibility member services?
is anyone interested in this ? enough to pre-pay?

That sounds like a good idea Sally...Maybe we could work on a design and have some fun with that...You and Denise are so talented...I am thinking of something eye-catching so people will ask about the pin, and then we can explain about psoriasis...
Anyone else with ideas are most welcome!!!

Well hello thread! I did not know you existed :D
Thanks for bumping this up Molly and THANK YOU for mentioning my name in the same sentence of Sally and talented :)
You are a sweet heart
I'd be happy to give this some serious thought and attempt a design, however I don't have experience designing for pins as you describe....so some research would have to be done with that....i.e. how does that work exactly...I assume there's some sort of "stamping" process....I'd likely need to discuss with the maker of the pins what they would need....perhaps get some samples, and tips for what works best when embossing or stamping a design on gold/enamel.
And, what size are you thinking? I'd imagine rather small? So something else to consider is the amount of "real estate" you're dealing with. NPF logo maybe can go on the back...but the "symbol"/message on the front?
Just some initial thoughts

I read the posts again and it sounds like it's up to us members to make the pin a reality. I think it's a great idea. It was brought up in the old days before the launch of this newer site. I did a search and there are a lot of custom pin places available. Are there any members who are in that business or know of someone who is? We would need a company that would be able to make more pins as supply and demand call for them. Does anyone know if we have to have the NPF permission to undertake the project? Like we can't use their logo or NPF on the design without permission. A design contest with members voting on the winner sounds like fun.
Sounds like we need to form a committee, any volunteers??? I would really like to see this happen. As I try to wave my arm in the air...I'll help.

you're the chairwoman:D ....didn't you ever hear about the squeaky wheel getting attention:D :D
any other volunteers...? I don't think it would be fair if you want to try to design and be on the committee...and I want to work on the design part....[no I've never done this before...so I'm in the dark as much as anyone]...we have some great artists, graphic designers on here, so maybe if we had an idea as to size, plus using the NPF logo, etc, and any other qualifications would be a start....I should think pretty small so that men , women and children could wear them...but still be attn getting...
response? anyone?
how many would be willing to prepay maybe just a part of it at first,
It can't be too much...can it?
Having the intellectual capacity of a box of rocks, when I saw this thread I thought it was going to be about using a pin to assist say in raising scalp plaques or something to that effect.......WHEW what an IDIOT!!!!! L&LOL:D
Anyway, heres a sobering thought, pins are like "widgets" something you order from the manufacturer by the millions. Of course you could have them custom made by a jeweler. Cost per would probably be negotiable, but I'm guessing pricey. I'm a pin nut and have them for eveything. Just looked through about 50 of them and can't even find where they were manufactured. I played in a golf tournament last year and they had custom pins(tournament specific) I will start researching the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE. More later.

Hello all, took the liberty of starting a yahoo page for anyone interested in volunteering to help make the pin a reality. I thought the first place we should start was to form a committee, who would be responisible for getting prices, setting up the rules for the design contest, etc...etc...

Thanks Pam for posting the web site for the pins...Looks like we will find what we want there...I have been looking it over, and there are so many to choose from...Lets get the contest going soon...should be fun...Wonder if it would be good for the kids to design their own? Well, all that can be sorted out I'm sure...
merkinsmom,
Can you get in(the site) if your not a Yahooer? I already have enough groups collecting info on me if you know what I mean.
coachG,
That pinsmart was a homerun(appro on opening day). I did not look around with much attention to detail, but plan to forward that site to several golf tournament planners. The pins I mentioned in my first post were, as I suspected, custom made by a local jeweler. Very pricey, but at $2000 per foursome I suppose money is no object when it comes to your pins. I am lodging a formal complaint with the committee, thats money taken from the scholarships. Then I am giving them that web address. Thank you very much. You just put money in some college bound kids pocket. :D
