Hello everyone. My six year old son was diagnosed with psoriasis this past fall. We've been using topical steroids to treat outbreaks but of course it does not prevent new outbreaks and this is not something I care to use on him long term.

I was wondering if anyone has had any succes in preventing outbreaks thru modifying diet and if so, what type of modifications did you use?

We are seeking a new dermatologist right nowand I'll be sure to pursue this with him/her as well.......

Thanks in advance...

I was around that age when I first showed symptons. I at a burger, fries & coke at almost every meal and could go threw an entire pack of twinkies in one sitting. I found out about 2 years ago that I am very allergic to yeast, mold, and basically mucus forming foods. Your Derm may suggest anything like this since they typically choose to medicate, but an easy thing is why not see if he has any allergies. Also, see if he has any severe reactions after he chows down on certain foods. Give it about 24 hours to see if his outbreaks get worse. Also, if they get worse in certain seasons that can also be a sign.

Hi Lisa,

We took our daughter (9) to a nutritionist/naturopath because the topical treatments were not working and I started to tire of treating the "skin symptoms" of this disease rather than the root causes/triggers. In any event, this nutritionist came highly recommended so we went and had a consult. Well, she suggested no dairy, less/no wheat, no citrus, a limited scope of protein foods (ie less red meat etc) and so on and so on. It was a really strict regiment. Desperate, we tried to switch Leah to this diet for about 3 months. It was challenging. I'm pregnant with my fourth child and Leah's our oldest. But, we bought only soy milk, non wheat snacks, no pasta, no bread in lunches, etc, etc

Unfortunately - it didn't seem to make one bit of difference. If anything, the disease has escalated. We pulled back when I noticed that she was probably more stressed trying to "self" monitor her diet than anything and ... as you know ... stress is a trigger. That, coupled with the fact that she's a pre-pubescent girl and I worried about the obsession with "diet" - made me pull away. Also, I received zero confirmation from any in the "established" medical community that diet changes like those listed above made a difference. Of my long list, staying away from "citrus" is the only rule that I've heard repeated.

Did we do the right thing starting it in the first place? Did we do the right thing, pulling her off? I DON"T KNOW. Its so frustrating. I still feel that diet must play a role despite all of this- so please post with your doctor's response to your questions. ok?

Thanks so much.

Chris (Leah's mom)
