A friend of mine brought me an advertisment from a magazine for something called "Acadia Skin Care", it's supposed to be money back no-risk etc etc. Has anyone tried this system ?

Hi!
I found such an article myself. Can not find anything on it.

Note from the Psoriasis Foundation Medical Relations Coordinator:

Acadia Skin Care is a marketing company that sells several products they claim clear psoriasis symptoms. The most common product they market is a zinc pyrithione spray sold under the names, SkinPlaque and SkinZinc.

A representative from Acadia told us their most common treatments consist of a two-step process. Step one involves the use of a gel, which contains salicylic acid, an ingredient that is helpful in removing the scale that accompanies plaque psoriasis. Step two involves the use of a spray, which contains zinc pyrithione to treat red, itchy skin.

Salicylic acid is recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as being effective in the treatment of psoriasis. Zinc pyrithione is recognized by the FDA as being effective in the treatment of eczema and seborrheic dermatitis, and has not been approved for treating psoriasis; however some people with psoriasis may find it helpful.

The goal of advertising is of course to entice a person into purchasing a product. Looking for such things as the active ingredient and finding out if the company offers a return policy can help in making a decision. However, it is always a good idea to keep in mind the advice “buyer beware”, especially if a product sounds too good to be true.

We would be interested in hearing from you if you decide to try any of the Acadia products.

I found some info on Acadia Skin care? here is a link to the site...

http://www.pinch.com/skin/pshame.html

here is a paragraph from that site:

Since 1999, there have been various telemarketing campaigns of newspaper and radio ads for topical zinc pyrithione products such as SkinZinc, Acadia Skin Care, Skin-Plaque and others. In 1990, the FDA specifically banned the promotion of zinc pyrithione products for psoriasis treatment. Recent clinical trials of such products have found them generally ineffective for psoriasis. There are a few public reports of people having success with a topical zinc pyrithione shampoo (such as Head & Shoulders) on the skin, but that's not a typical response. Generic dandruff shampoos have about ten times the concentration of active ingredient compared to the overhyped "Zinc" sprays. See the Skin-Cap FAQ for more details and reports.

That is a good site to bookmark, I use it alot when I see ads for so called help/cures. Hope this helps....
