Hi,

I'm Chris - my daughter is 9 year old Leah with chronic plaque psoriasis. A month ago we started coal tar oil soaks in the tub nightly and continued our retinue of hydrocortizone oitnment on the spots before bed. This, combined with moderate sun exposure has worked wonders.

My question - should I be using moisturizers as well as the hydrocortizone cream?? If so, what kind? Do I apply the moisturizer on the spots (after the hydro-cort dries)? My derm never said to use them, but after reading some posts, I think I should be.

Help?

Chris

Hi,

Regardless of whether it is cream or ointment, I have an old derm trick to share with you.

1. Soak in warm, not hot, tub for no more than 20 minutes. Gently remove as much scale as possible without rubbing.

2. Blot dry, no rubbing!

3. Apply hydrocortisone, let dry.

4. Apply a liberal amount of moisturiser all over the body.

You may have noticed that your daughter gets very itchy about 10 minutes into the bath. Taking an itch medication 1 hour before bathing will help.

If scale build up is a problem you can purchase tar ointments with the ingredient salycilic acid. That will gently remove the scale. Apply two hours before the bath.

Be careful with sun exposure when using the tar products, she is likely to burn more easily which will be very bad for the p.

Good luck. Let us know if we can help further.

PJ nailed it.

Just wanted to make sure that you do not miss two things...

Sunshine does burn quickly with coal tar the night before.

Get the hydrocort in and working...don't dilute with the moisturizer.

PS.

doc's never mention moisturizer. Not once for me in 23 years.
