My husband just got back from his trip to West Palm. Come to find out, one of our good friends also has p (never knew it). He sent home a box of Alvita, dandelion root tea bags, says he has been using this for a long time (he buys it by the case!!!!) and swears it works wonders for him. So I am going to give it a try (of course:)) ...............Just wondering if anyone else uses this, or has heard about it????

Hi Coach....

I've never heard of Alvita nor the connection with p. Like you I'd be willing to give it a try if it's known to work for someone else.

Keep us posted on this one!

Dandelion Tea

If you´ve got yellow flowers popping up in your lawn, don´t get rid of them! They make a healthy tea.

Pop off the yellow heads, without any of the green parts, and steep around 4 of them in a cup of water for 20 minutes. You can eat the greens as a salad, and both are quite healthy for you.

yippee!!! LOL ;)

I'm willing to try most anything, so I started the tea regimen this morning!! The person that suggested this to me says he has tried "everything" and that this particular brand of tea was his only positive outcome, so what the heck, I'm giving it a try. (If nothing else I'll have a cleansed liver:))

Ouchyk: Just to let you know, it tastes fine (just like tea)............Didn't even have to get "Mikey" to try it............lol

ARL: Thanks for the info and I will keep you posted as well.

Deb: Sorry, but I didn't pluck the heads off and make my own tea. When I lived up north we used to have dandylions all over our backyard, and of course the bees loved dandylions, so I was the one constanly getting bee stings from stepping barefoot on them!!

well I had my first cup of dandelion tea last night...................
think maybe morning would be better...I awakened in the early hours......the tea is not just a diuretic, but an "everyway" cleanser...whewwwww.................was that my liver getting an "inner bath"???..........so what happens today when I drink more tea?...there's nothing left to cleanse...JK
so ok couch....whats your story :D ...? how did you fair on your dandelion tea?...anyone else try it???? I'll be interested in knowing if my reaction was the typical.....????;)

ok I'm going to edit this~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

and not beat around the bush....it has a laxative effect!!!!

bonnie25

You're absolutely right Sally! Dandelion is a great cleanser! Milk thistle is too. It aids digestion and pushes toxins out the liver. And yes, it is a diuretic. It reduces bloating and water retention.
I have tried dandelion tea and the greens in my salad. Didn't really notice a huge difference in my psoriasis but it didn't get worse either. I like natural herbs that are safe and dandelion is really healthy for you! Lots of potassium and vit C.
It is amazing that a weed in the yard can be so good for you!

This is exactly why I love this site......................I come on here this morning and there is Sally, trying the tea with me.........thanks!!!! It's so nice to have "company" on a new venture:) ................. I haven't had any "effects" YET, but today is day two. I did feel more energetic at gym last night (don't even know if there's a correlation or not) but that's about it so far.

Thanks to you Bonnie for the info!!

Sally, I haven't had a chance to go to the Health Food store yet to get the
dandelion tea bags, but like I had said in my previous post when my mom
had cooked the greens, it was very good but it did have an elaxitve effect. :) :) :)
Boy, I'm up a lot during the nite as if I had taken a diuretic & if the tea acts
like a diuretic, I'll flood the place up. LOL

I've been taking Milk Thistle for quite awhile cause I had been on Mevacor a
choleteral lowering drug & it had raised the enzymes in my liver. I haven't noticed
it doing anything for my "P", but perhaps it does have the effects of a diuretic
do you suppose???

Oh well, I'll still try the tea & since I take the Milk Thistle & if the tea effects me like it
did you Sally, I'll have to stock up on Febreze & make myself at home on the pot.. LOL

Ha Ha Sally, just think you'll have a clean liver & kidney. I sure laughed at the way
you wrote how it affected you. Tee Hee

I was trying to be diplomatic about it...and saw that it wasn't working so I just plumb came out and told the problem (or maybe not a problem)

so I'm having a cup right now and it is tasty....I boil a large cup of water in the microwave with a cinnamon stick thrown in plus the tea bag let it steep a bit add stevia, just a few drops as I don't care for very sweet tea... and it is very good...make sure you get the roasted..I can taste the roasted part.... Yummy............

I read on one of the sites I posted that one woman drank the tea 3 times a day...whoa!!! I think I'll test it for a few days first:D

my dh takes milk thistle....during one of his tests, after his triple bypass op. they gave him a test with the blue dye, that caused damage to his kidneys.......I started him on milk thistle as soon as we came home from the hosp. and he is fine now...so it works for kidneys too not just liver...(i researched it first cause I thought I remembered reading that)

I inherited some old Zane Gray books that belonged to a great-great grand father. In one of those books I found a handwritten recipe for Dandelion Wine. I haven't thought of it in years. Think I'll go look it up. I wasn't old enough to be interested when I found it, and left it in the book. It may take me awhile to find it again. Do you think it might work too? lol

I love tea, all kinds, so I'll be trying it too.

Well i sure hope this will be a good laxative, because nothing works for me and as a water retainer because of my health,,hopefully this will work,,,i can't believe how long ago i was told to drink this and i didn't listen,,,as usual!!!!!!Going tomorrow to the health store and buy some,,,,i'll let you know also.... I plan to drink the Dandelion Tea once I get some.

It's on my "to-do" list.

ARL your story about the dandelion under the chin has sparked a faded childhood memory of my own about dandelions and i'm trying to think what it is....it involved the dandelion making a yellow mark and something about butter....i didn't think it was under the chin. I hope I think of it.

I love this board.

you know what this reminds me, why don't we try calamine or i think it's called caladrel????????this should help the itch,,,,right???? arl

past three days on dandelion tea....sum-up.....tastes good!

everything has mellowed out as far as laxative effect!

Remember if its working on the liver its going to take a while to see/get results.

I have these cinnamon sticks that I bought once for "I dunno what" and have been putting one in a cup of water and microwaving with the tea bag...it really jazzes it up...plus I think cinnamon is good for something that ails the bod....
so here's to my 4th day!!! bottoms up!!!

coachG
10-23-2003, 10:13 AM
Day 4 for me too!! The taste is mellow, and I still have yet to "encounter" your initial results Sally:)

How much tea are you drinking each day?? My box says 4oz. per tea bag, so thats all I've been taking. I even go as far as measuring it (dork...hehe). I'm just wondering if I'm drinking enough per day.

Also, when I first joined this board (1 montha ago yesturday!!!:)) I was reading about coq10, so I also bought that, and have now been taking 75 mgs. once per day, for almost one month (I believe you also started this Sally, are you still taking it??).

Now if something does work I won't know exactly if it's the tea, the coq10, the sun, the ocean water, the Palmers,............I guess it doesn't matter as long as something works!!!

Have a wonderful day!!

Well, I went to the Health Food Store & bought a box of Alvita Roasted Caffeine Free Dandelion
Root Tea Bags. There were 30 tea bags in the box. The directions says to pour 6 oz. of boiling
water into cup with the tea bag in it. Let it steep for 3 minutes. Press the bag before removing
to enhance the flavor. Add honey to sweeten. Ha Ha, I added a little more water than 6 oz.
cause I wanted to weaken it a bit so I don't have the aftermath that Sally did. Now, if I end up
being on the pot all night, I'll blame you Coach & you too Sally. LOL Incidentally, I'm a tea drinker,
so Coach do you know what will happen if I drink like 3 or 4 cups during the day???? I'll try only
one cup a day for now & see what happens Ha Ha Ha. Allright, today is day one.

Deb, sorry to hear you aren't feeling up to par. A cup of tea will definitely give you a pick-em-up,
however whether it's the dandelion tea that will do it, I don't know. LOL

treatments that is, LOL If I have success with the 2 cups, I'll get on the regime of having 2 cups

Sally, I do not think using the cinnamon stick in your tea is causing to act as an elaxative.
I've been using a cinnamon stick since day two & it doesn't effect me that way anymore, yet,

History........he has had p for over 25 yrs; hands, arms, ears, legs, buttocks, groin , stomach....essentially 90% of his body was covered.

He said he went to several derms, tried various creams, lotions, steroids (never any of the b's)............he was turned on to the tea 15 years ago and saw dramatic results. He said that the dandylion tea (alvita) was the only thing that keeps it under control.

He has been drinking the tea now for the past 15 yrs and has one cup every morning. He now has only remnants of his p........his wife says you can see scars on his hands and arms.

Good morning everyone!
I was just wondering if any of you have tried dandelion root in a supplement form? I have tried it for about 2 mos. earlier this summer. I also tried detox tea from Yogi tea. It has all sorts of good things in it, dandelion included. That tea you can take for up to 30 days. Then they had another tea which was called daily detox which was for everyday use. I didn't seem to notice a huge diff in my psoriasis but it didn't get worse either. You guys have me wanting to get back on this since winter is coming! I did feel so much cleaner inside! :)
I am happy to hear all the success stories, especially ARL! It sounds good! :)

Lottie, I don't think it smells nor tastes like ordinary tea. It has a smell & taste all of
it's own. :) But seriously, it's not too bad. I guess I got used to it. :) I use 1 pkg of Equal & use
a cinnamon stick all at once with a cup of water with the tea bag in the microwave. (The cinnamon

As always........ Curious, Sceptical & Willing & not always in that order.

Here's the gaff on Dandelion Root Tea.

Dandelion......................................... .........

Dandelion removes blockages from the liver, stomach and urinary tract. With its mineral salts, it tones at a cellular level. 1 tsp. of fresh tincture a day makes a great tonic for your whole body. For you chemistry buffs, dandelions are high in trace mineral salts, iron, and vitamins A, C, E, and B-Complex. The active constituents are water soluble taraxasterol and taraxerol, fructose, inulin, choline, pectin, and inositol. This common weed has medicine to balance the body and can be taken daily since there is no known toxicity for regular use of dandelion.

A tea...........................
Made from the dried root helps to relieve constipation and digest fat. It provides a mild diuretic action without stressing the kidneys or depleting potassium. Herbal root teas are especially beneficial during the colder months of the year as their condensed yang energy helps to draw awareness deep within the body and calms a busy mind. Dandelion root combines well with Wild Yam root, Oatstraw, and Skullcap to nourish the body's sugar-managing system. I make a tincture with these herbs when I am prone to low blood sugar.

Leaves.........................
Strengthen your digestion with a cup of after dinner tea made with bitter dandelion leaves. Steep 1 tsp. dried or 2 tsp. fresh in 1 cup of water for 20 minutes. You'll notice a definite improvement with daily use for 2 weeks. Maintain your health with the fresh young leaves in salads bringing chlorophyll and rich mineral salts to the cells of your body. This free food is a smart addition to a preventative diet. I first learned about the benefits of juicing the leaves when I lived in Oregon. While taking my daily walk in a nearby park, I spotted a woman gathering an armload of leaves from the un-mowed perimeter of the field. She shared her success healing her husband's stomach ulcer with regular juice made from the fresh leaves. She explained that in her native China, it was a traditional remedy to heal digestion problems.

Flowers........................
The beautiful bright color, the scent, and the shapes can bring healing to the mind and emotions. When you are relaxed, your body performs its natural functions smoothly like a well oiled machine. Though bitter tasting, a tea made by steeping 3 or 4 rinsed flower tops in 1 cup of water for 15 to 20 minutes may be the best antidote for anger. The yellow color helps to clear the mind and relax a tight stomach. This can help with "letting go" or detachment from trying to control life.

Spiderman,
That is a great description of dandelion, the best one I have seen on this thread yet.
I think I will have to go ahead on buy me some tea again or scavage the yard and make my own. One thing I should say to anyone who gets the dandelions in the yard to make sure there are no chemicals that have been applied to the dandelions. My husband always tries to get rid of the weeds in the immediate yard but the ones out back are untouched.
No body here has answered my post about if anyone here has tried the dandelion root in a capsule form. I guess that would be no.
Anyways, have a great day everyone! :)

Hello Debber, Sally, et al,

Hi guys, nice to be talking with you all. Just so you know where I am coming from, one of my pet peeves on the internet is plagiarism. One of the authors above has many impressive examples on our message boards of publishing copyrighted material without crediting the copyright holder in some small way.

I am wondering how Linda Kingsbury would feel if she knew that her copyrighted work was being published to our message board without her permission or knowledge - http://www.mybackyard.com/current/24p1.htm

Without getting too bent out of shape about all this, I think we would all be doing a real justice to the authors of many original works if we would perhaps not encourage the plagiarists by given them 'kudos' and a 'job well done' for copying and pasting the protected works of another.

Once again, I just happen to feel strongly about this issue, and that's why I mention it. To steal and pass off the ideas or words of another as one's own without crediting the source is considered a severe breach of net-etiquette. To repeat this act of literary theft numerous times on these message boards with impunity is indefensible.

I'm just thinking that maybe we should keep our radars up and not encourage this type of behavior. Thanks for listening !

I started the Roasted Dandelion Root Tea five days ago. By the second evening my itching had subsided. My P was already on the road to clearing, so i can't say if it has helped there, but just the relief from itchies makes it worth drinking for me. Pamella says that the brand to buy is Alvita, but my healthfood store had problems with them as a supplier, so they carry "Seelect" brand. They assured me that it was the same product, just a different supplier. It's not an unpleasant taste, and goes down easier with some sweetening. Since I'm taking Methotrexate and the tea is supposed to cleanse the liver, I'm hopeful that it will be helpful for me.

Well it's been about 10 days for me and I generally have an 8 ounce cup in the evening (sometimes it's earlier in the day) with a capful of lemon juice and 2 teaspoons of raw sugar. And, I let the tea bag steep for about 5 minutes.

I see a difference in my psoriasis. It's tamed back and not so scaley and raw and bright.

BUT, I'm also on an antibiotic and still are using the topicals psoriatec and elocon and moisturizing like crazy.

SO, is it a combination of all those things alone? Or all those things including the Dandelion Tea? Or JUST the Dandelion Tea? I don't know.

I do like my tea ritual i've created for myself after dinner and it's nice to drink it and it DOES keep me regular! :D and if it's only doing that and maybe helping other things aside from p. then i'm OK with that and will keep drinking it. But if there's even a small chance it's helping my p. even better! I certainly don't want to disregard it as a possibility at this stage!

Drink up!

time to bring this to the FRONT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hows everyone doing with their tea??? report card time......

I don't have any itchies (unless I have lots of sugar...like a candy bar... little bits don't bother me.) and then its just a momentary thing.

bathroom::o it acts as a diuretic now...didn't at first...not bad just enough for some nightime trips.

can't tell with lesions, cause I'm also taking noni and using LOTS of moisturizers...like at least 5 times a day...(home brew) usually but I do like to alternate so as not to become immune to any one.

NEXT.............................................. ..............................................

Sally........I too itch when I eat sugar..........I was hoping I was wrong, but I have been doing some test/analysis with sugar, and ..................ahhhh, it's true, it causes me to itch!!!!!!

I have been doing the elimination process with foods, and then moderately entering them back into my diet....and the sugar soooooo failed!!! Next food....I dunno, can't take this!!!!ahhhh.

I am still drinking my tea religiously. I honestly can't tell if it is helping me. My elbows were totally clear (except for the light remnants) but the rest of my p was the same...bad!!! I went North 6 hours (for 3 days), it was cold and much drier than here, and my p came back with a vengeance!!!!!

When my elbows cleared almost TOTALLY, I was thrilled but I wondered why just the elbows. I thought if it was the tea, then why not the rest of my body???? Of course I also wonder, is it the constant shea butter??? (since the elbows get it more often than the rest of my body)?? Or could it be the cq10???? Or maybe it's a perfect combination of all????

For the most part I'm back to where I was a month ago.....I will continue to drink the tea, and use the lotions, and oils, and desitin, and cq10, and anything else I can get my paws on!!:) I will never give up, but it is sure hard to determine what actually is working. It is hard to figure out what makes it trigger. For health reasons though....I do believe in the dandelion.

11-12-2003, 11:34 AM
I keep saying that I'm going to stop by my local health food store & bring home some dandelion tea. I wake up every night itching myself to the bleeding point!!! And that's if I can even get to sleep. Along with the P I suffer from chronic water retention & constipation. I drink lots of water during the day to no avail. Somebody give me a big push. I've got to try this!!!!!!

If you noticed I changed my avatar from a sad itchy blue creature to a rainbow thanks to all of you.

anyone want to try it??? I searched a little bit for info on PSORIACAPS but couldn't find much...its a chicago area company specializing in derma products..
several gals tried it and got good results....anyone want to add it to our tea?

I think I'll talk to my pharmacists' tomorrow....see what they think.

Went to the Vitamin Cottage today and bought a box of roasted dandelion root tea bags and a bottle of dandelion root extract capsules - 425 mg. Did not see the PsoriaCaps, but being a male, did not ask either....but did grab some Omega-3, folic acid, lecithin, and, have been taking the tumeric and some zinc for about two weeks. Have not really seen much of a difference with the T and the Zinc, but perhaps the scalp is better. I probably would be considered to have a very mild case at this moment, dozen or so small spots on my torso and back and shins...more of an annoyance...have been bad in the past. Perhaps I taking this stuff wouldn't get me to 0%, but might keep it under check. At what point would a Derm even allow a person to consider using biologics. Absolutely no more MTX.

Have you tried the dandelion tea yet???

I've been reading about your posts on the "itchies"....the tea has helped some of us with the same problem.......
as far as constipation and water retention..it does help some of us...another thing that has helped me in many, many ways is coconut oil...for skin and ingesting...(an inside/outside remedy)one article is posted on the alternative treatments....here is another

http://tropicaltraditions.com/coconut_oil_is_the_healthiest_oil.htm

50% of coconut oil is Lauric acid...one of the ingredients found in mother's milk....if its good for babies its gotta be good for us grown-ups!!!!

I have used the oil for lotions and the base ingredient for my own concoctions...recently started taking it by the tablespoon (3.5 tbls is the therapeutic dose once a day) for the benefits.... in juices or smoothies is the easy way....

if anyone does try it...make sure you get the virgin coconut oil at a health food store .....

I'm using noni, dandy tea, coconut oil. and don't have any scales..just flat pink plaques....some have disappeared as I've mentioned in other posts....taking it inwardly is a new venture...

I will say I don't have problems with constipation....or water retention...but...........since I started taking it I've gone from one bm to about 4/5 ..unbelievable.....must be the lauric acid????? just call me "baby Sa-Sa" :D

Question: Has anyone still drinking the fabulous :) tea???
Deb, Pammy, Sally, SteveW, how are y'all doin' with the tea drinkin'? Any success???
I'M on my 29th day of it, & I don't see any improvement on the outside
of my body. I can't see the inside of my body to be able to tell if it's
doing any good there. Tee Hee

Hello everyone!!

Just wanted to say that I never had the tea or the supplements but I did eat dandelion roots.

I would dig the roots out, boil, peel then eat. I also would apply pure virgin olive oil too all patches before I went to bed.

I did this treatment for about 3 months and found that I didn't itch and the patches had flattened out.

Okay my Good Friends,

I have the tea, I have the lemon and the honey. I'm going to try it religiously for a whole week and then send you my report card.

I woke up with the spots on my sheets. Something weird about that. Although I have P everywhere I itch madly at night on my upper arms & shoulders, not my legs or my trunk. Any ideas on that one?

Itchily,

Have you ever looked into milk thistle for protecting the liver? My DH had a triple bypass about 3 yrs ago and during one of the tests [or because of it] the dye caused his kidneys to not function properly..[don't remember all the facts] anyway his cardiologist sent him to a kidney specialist [Nephrologist] we couldnt get in right away ...had to wait a month....so I started him on milk thistle
because I knew it worked for the liver and in my search...saw that it also helped kidneys. .....couple days prior to visit he had to go for a blood test for the dr. to compare results from the two tests..........we got there doc read results....and looked up and asked all kinds of q's ...dh asked how results were and he remarked they had improved by blah blah points....so then I spoke up and asked if he ever heard of M Thistle...[long conversation] he acred interested...but my point is he has been on it ever since and his readings are now normal....
my nieces dh is an alcoholic and she has him take M. Thistle [for years] he just had all kinds of tests done and his liver is normal in size, function but he does have gall bladder probs...nephew has P and is on embrel...but also taking M. thistle for liver protection. here is one site.....why don't you do a search and see what you think....

I get my Alvita dandylion root roasted tea from the health food store in the mall (not even sure of the name). It is rather inexpensive $7. for the box of 30 bags.

I have been drinking one cup per day for just over one month. I have noticed that I am not as itchy as before. I'm not certain that this is the result of the tea as I have enlisted in other forms of treatment as well. To me it doesn't matter, I will continue to drink my tea because I know it carries many health benefits.

Best of luck to you and thanks for the vote of confidence!! :)

I have started drinking this tea after reading this post last week. It has been 6 days now, but no significant effects yet. I also did not had the bathroom urges as you all described. I drink 2 per day, and I will continue for another week or two to see if there are any results. I am interested to see if this will work for anybody else.

The taste is not as bad as I thought. It almost tastes like an bad institutionalized coffe :). I read that they used to brew this instead of coffe back in the days.

Looks like this experiment has been going on for about the past
four months. It would be helpful to the rest of us if you tea
drinkers wouldn't mind posting your results. Also helpful would
be if you listed your type of psoriasis please.

So did it reduce your p? Reduce the itching? Anyone experience
remision?

LottieBay

I have Guttate Psoriasis on my legs, hips, arms, shoulders and back. Also scalp p in a couple of stubbon patches. It cleared when I was on MTX but came back when I stopped taking it. I'm using topicals now. Dovenex and Ebeline E and I'm greatly improved, but not clear.

The Dandelion tea did reduce the itching for me and was a good diuretic, helping with puffyness in my ankles. I only purchased one box of it and didn't replace it when I ran out.

For me, I drink the tea every day!! I do know that it helps keep down swelling (water retention anyway). I also have been less itchey (but the itch never goes away completely). This tea is a part of my daily p therapy rituals.

Our family has long enjoyed fresh dandelion greens for salad and we have made our own dandelion wine. Never saw that it helped my P any; however, luved that wine!! I'll have to get some tea and try it. I like tea, (luv the wine). Keep us posted on how this goes and I'll get some too! Have taken CQ10 for ages, never saw ithelped P but it is certainly recommended by my cardiologist.

Ginger,
Send me some of that wine. Wish I was sitting on that great porch of yours sipping some now with all the ladies!

hey, I have been getting lots of laughs and memories flooding
my way!!!! I too love this board!!
Speaking of dandilions my yard is full of them, and i have never
picked so much in my life as I did last year... I have a lizard that
will do almost anything for them....Hmmmm..come to think of it,
maybe dandy tea is dandy cause my lizard dont have P!!!!
I remember a thing we used to chant about those pretty flowers and it went like this,"Momma had a baby and its head
popped off!" And when you said popped off you would flick the
head of the flower off.I know that was rather morbid but at the
time we didn't know any better!
As for gathering dandilions this year....Well my lizard better
share lol!!!!

confessions?
I'll admit I ran out and because I don't go out much in the winter.
(DH does most of the grocery shopping ...his excuse to get out and have a smoke (which he doesn't think I know about))
and hated to ask him to go all the way to health food store...to replace it...anyway I have since purchased a box on my last jaunt out and now all I have to do is get back in the routine....next visit to the store, weather is getting warmer, I am going to buy several boxes so i dont run out.

I just got used to the nice cuppa at the end of the day....when everyone is tucked in (cats, dogs, people) and I'm all alone....peaceful ahhhhh.
