glad you enjoyed the article....."EDUCATE NOT MEDICATE" are words to live by........but if we do have to medicate lets at least be informed of all options......................free world? I sure hope so.

yep you guessed it..
GLUT IN YOUR GUT
A few years ago, people on the cutting edge of diet fads were buzzing about "gluten sensitivity," or sensitivity to the protein found in wheat and some other grains. What most of them didn't realize was that true gluten sensitivity means that a person likely has a serious -- and often undetected -- disease called celiac disease or celiac sprue.
In celiac disease, the small bowel's fingerlike projections (villi), which absorbs nutrients, become flattened in the presence of gluten. This renders the villi helpless to do their job, resulting in the inability to absorb nutrients fully. This malabsorption can result in a host of medical conditions, from anemia to infertility. It is estimated that one in 150 people suffer from celiac disease and only one in 2,500 are diagnosed.
For the latest on the disorder, I talked with Richard J. Ferrell, MD, a leading researcher on the disease and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He explained that celiac disease results from an inappropriate immune response to ingested gluten in genetically predisposed people. It mostly affects those who are of Western European descent. In general, most adults are negatively affected by overconsumption of gluten. However, when the immune system becomes unable to compensate from the extent of the exposure and behaves erratically, the disease state is born.
Celiac disease can start at any time, from infancy onward. In fact, 20% of new cases occur in people age 60 and over. Dr. Ferrell says that this is because in many patients the disease results from what he calls a "one-two hit." One, you are born with it in your genes, but the disease doesn't develop unless you get a "second" hit at some point in your life. Doctors believe this second hit is something that causes a break in the lining of the small bowel, allowing gluten into deeper recesses of the body where it triggers the inappropriate immune response. They speculate that this could result from a gastrointestinal virus or heavy use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen). Or it could be because of physical and biochemical distortions to the structure and function of the intestinal membrane as a result of excess consumption of glutens or other inflammation-provoking materials. There are tests that can be done by a naturopathic physician or informed gastroenterologist to help determine which of this group of substances has the greatest potential destabilizing effect on an individual.
SYMPTOMS
The most common symptom of celiac disease is diarrhea. Infants with the disease generally get diarrhea, along with abdominal distention and sometimes vomiting, in the weeks or months after they have started to eat cereal foods. Often this is a direct result of introducing grains too early in the diet. Some experts recommend waiting the better part of the first year of life before introducing unsprouted (high gluten) grains into the diet. Older children often have a discoloration or mottling of their teeth, a result of their system's not absorbing enough calcium. In adults, the most frequent symptoms are episodic or nocturnal diarrhea, flatulence and bloating, a combination that often results in the mistaken diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease.
About half of adults who have celiac disease do not have diarrhea. Instead, they become anemic, the second most common symptom in adults, followed by other deficiencies, including that of folate, calcium and other vital nutrients. Sometimes the only symptom is recurrent mouth sores.
The spectrum of responses to celiac disease is extremely broad, says Dr. Ferrell. There are people for whom even a tiny amount of gluten will cause extreme symptoms. Yet some can go a lifetime with it and not have any diagnosed problems other than a little gastrointestinal distress from overdoing it on the pasta. At the other extreme, there are people, including children, who must entirely eliminate gluten -- primarily wheat, but often all grains -- from their diet.

I'm not knocking your beliefs at all. You make many valid points and bring very interesting debate to the table. But you also tend to knock modern medicine with comments like educate not medicate.
My question is, if you were involved in an accident and were seriously hurt, where would you go and why?
Would you go to the hospital full of Dr.'s and medicine or to the health food store?

of course I'd go to the hospital!!!
screaming and yelling all the way....:D
all I'm trying to say and do is........... why can't we have our own CHOICE in what we choose to read or use, why let some little man (metaphorically speaking) take away our options to read, eat, use of our meds.go on special foods etc ......to me this sounds like censorship....
and if you noticed I did say IF we have to medicate....then let's learn all about it...be informed!
as far as I'm concerned live and let live.....I didn't start this......
I was just breezin' along minding my own business when ...wham! all this!!!! It's really been more fun over in "conversations" less stress ...don't know why I bother coming over on this side.
At 72 years of age I'm going to do what I want to do anyway......
xxoo hugs and kisses:D

I respect your answer! But, I dont think it is censorship. We all have the right to voice our opinions.
I tried my best not to respond to this thread, but here I am. Bob, Marlene, Hollis, Steve; I applaud you in your efforts in attempting to get through to those who are snowed by a theory that claims to be a cure.
It is indeed scientifically supported that diet, stress, meds, weather and more has an affect on our P. Difference being that these scientific studies do not support the idea that changing any of these factors, drastically or otherwise, can cure P. Nothing has as of yet.
If the diet helps you, fine. So might standing on your head spitting nickles. But if anyone tries to publish or advertise this as a cure someone needs to step in and regulate this sort of claim.
If the topicals, the chemicals, the biologics were given to us with the same sort of testing that the supporters of "leaky bowel syndrome" have conducted to make this claim that such a condition exists, many of us might be dead! Facts & statements need to be supported by scientific study, not assumption. The very theory of leaky bowel is preposterous. Haven't you heard of peritonaitis? Any bowel leakage, undiagnosed, is DEADLY!
I've said it before, in a previous thread, supposed "medical" information is dangerous.
Okay, I've said my peace. And by the way, Kenny just completed a month of following Pagano's diet.

and I'm not in the field of medicine....only a person with P trying to find an answer....
my understanding is that leaky gut syndrome is just another (colloquial name ?) for crohn's disease
from what I have read and from what I understand crohn's disease is a chronic inflamatory disease of the intestines which causes ulcerations in the small and large intestines......but it can also effect the digestive system anywhere between the mouth and anus.....
this site probably explains it better than I can and their resources and info seem to come from some pretty reliable sites....but it won't do any good unless you read it.
http://www.ecureme.com/emyhealth/natural/n_leaky.asp
however I'm sick of the subject....there is NO CURE for psoriasis
but there are plenty of MASKS....so maybe we can all pick what we want...biologics....mtx....enbrel....sea salts...diet....petroleum jelly..............................and on and on
good for Kenny!
Thankyou Sally!
I have to say that i am bias towards the LGS, it fits all of the facts that i know (let me know of facts that it gos against, im not saying that there arnt any, i just dont of them! + some of the facts people say goes against it dont actually seem to) also, in following paganos diet i am noticing an improvement! :)
There are two quotes i found interesting-
However, the implications of leaky gut syndrome on the body's general health are serious, and orthodox medicine has no quick fixes - the antibiotics that might be prescribed are only going to exacerbate the problem. Most Physicians deny its very existence, perhaps because the pharmaceutical industry has no drugs to counteract it.
-like i mentioned in anouther post, studies carried out by big drug companies can be bias. So we can not just dismiss things like this
Band-aid treatments with corticosteroids, prescription antibiotics and immuno suppressive drugs may be temporarily life-saving for acute episodes of pain, bleeding or severe inflammation as occurs in lupus or colitis. In the long run, however, none of these treatments do anything to heal the leaky gut problem
-This goes out to the 'but why has treatment worked for some people, pagano must be wrong' crew!
I would also just like to point out, we live in am age of millions of different medications & medical practices, yet the worlds health seems to be rapidly declining.
My personally (and indead many others) opinon
We eat **** !
(excuse my hint at bad language!)

How is health declining exactly??? If you go to the conversations board you will see a post from Helen regarding what life was 100 years ago.....and you will notice that the life expectancy was 47 years old!!!! We have doubled that now...so how is health declining again??? We die of the same things today that we did 100 years ago except now we know what it is and how to combat it......so just because we have names of dieseases doesn't mean that our health is any worse off.
Also Leaky gut has nothing to do with psoriasis....we know with 100% certainty that psoriasis is autoimmune, we also have linked certain genes to psoriasis neither of which has anything to do with intestinal permeability. As a matter of fact if leaky gut had anything to do with psoriasis then the immune suppresants that we use would be 100% ineffective because leaky gut has nothing to do with the immune system.

This statment is so absurd!
Do you think the FDA who has the ultimate authority to approve a drug is also bias?
And when Kenny discovered what that diet was based on, he said . . . . mpfppfpmfpmfppffppmffpppmfm !!!
well, i might be wrong, you might be wrong, we all might be wrong, we all might be right for that matter! who knows, we are not gods! so im just gonna leave it lie, wot i do know thou is that i believe paganos diet is starting to work for me

Fair enough and best of luck on the diet. I would aleast like to request if it starts working for you. that you post how much clearing you achived on the diet, how long it took for the clearing to start and complete. maybe a basic overview of what you ate (how much, how offten.) I as said before I am not sold on it being a cause but I would like to know how it works out for you. again best wishes and good luck on sticking to it.
