How Long?

After months of fighting with my insurance company, I am ready to admit defeat. They refuse to pay for Enbrel until I have tried a course of Sulfasalazine and then Methotrexate. My question...how long is a generally acceptable "trial period"...in other words, how long should I take either med before I tell them that it is not working? I want the Enbrel quite badly as it is the one drug my doctor feels will help but the insurance company is making us jump through these hoops.
