I recently went to the doctor about very intense arthritis pain. She recommended an alkaline ash diet. This rang a bell for me. My family has been using 1half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water to rid themselves of headaches. This works especially well to prevent morning after hangovers. Putting the two pieces on information together I decided to try the baking soda for arthritis pain. Over the course of the day I had three to four glasses of water with baking soda. I did this for three days, by the third day my pain was gone and I had the first full nights sleep in months.
Baking soda, in a warm bath is helping the skin. I had exema under my foot, when I was young and my mother was making me take my bath with baking soda.
Best thing in the world for washing your face to take off dead skin and old make-up

Thanks Brandy!
Is it still working out for you?
I'd like to experiment with it in the bath as well. i have tons of it...but have only been using it in my Water Pik to clean my teeth.
:D
WOW! I recall being told by a hair stylist to rinse my hair with a baking soda wash to get rid of all the old hair products. It leaves your hair feeling brand new!!! Hmm, have we stumbled upon an old remedy?
Thanks Brandy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if it would help the scalp too. Might try soaking my head in the bath with b/soda or perhaps mixing some b/soda with aqueous cream and use it as a shampoo. Worth a try!!

So for the plaque P on your head..what do you use to loosen up the P? Just baking soda and water or what?
Bubbbles2002
06-01-2004, 08:57 AM
What I do, is just fill up the tub with warm water, and baking soda, soak in the tub for about 30 mins, including my scalp, I just put my head under water ever so often, it loosens up the P, and when u get out of the tub, I would suggest using a comb to comb your hair, and u should see that P coming off your scalp, I then use the blow dryer to dry my hair and get all the flakes out of my hair :)

Ok, I tried baking soda out last night. Mixed a liberal amount in with some aqueous moisturiser. Sat down in front of the tv and place big globs (lol) around my scalp and massaged it all in.
It stung for a while.....then it settled. I combed my hair through with a fine comb and HOLY COW BATMAN.....P flakes were literally coming off my scalp in the millions....couldn't believe it! I left it in alllllll night (being moisturiser its not greasy like an oil). Woke this morning, shampooed etc, no greasiness at all. My scalp feels a little smoother and less "angry" this morning.......
So guess what I'm doing again tonight :P

I just tried this. Still wrapped in a towel, in fact.
I used an entire one pound box of baking soda in the bathtub. Heh...I always go a little overboard. Let me say this: This was the first time in months that I took a bath and it didn't hurt. My hands are pruned! Pruned!! I cannot remember the last time I was able to stay in the bathtub for that long. Oh, it felt so nice!
^.^
Anyway, soaked for about half an hour, maybe longer, periodically soaking my head. It feels strange. To be graphic and probably a little gross, the plaques end up feeling kind-of slimy, and then they just slide off. Some of my thickest and most painful plaques just slid right off. No pain, no blood, no tears.
I took a shower after I soaked, because I had to wash my hair. Shower was less painful than usual. I actually danced in the shower. I danced! And sang! Horribly off-key! Can't remember the last time I was that happy in the shower.
Got out of the shower and followed my usual routine: lots and lots and lots of lotion. But I'm moving and my skin isn't hurting, it isn't pulling, it isn't cracking or drying out like it normally does five minutes out of the shower.
At the moment, I'm happier than I've been in a long time. And much, much more comfortable.
Thank you to those who suggested it. And if you haven't tried this, you should!
^.^
*dances off to get dressed and do the homework she should have done instead of soaking in a bathtub*

This is quite interesting... actually, it is starting to make sense to me.
It has been said that a change of diet to an 80% alkaline diet with a 20% acid diet will do wonders for this disease.
(They aren't dermatologists and not nutritionists...so, before you do anything rash (no pun intended), perhaps you may want to check with your doctor or derm about this theory...)
I've read about this alkaline/acid diet in two books... one written back in the 1930's and one written quite recently...
I've had P for almost 25 years. You'd think I would have at least experimented with this on myself. I did bring this up to my doctor... she said she never heard of such a theory. Maybe your doctor or derm has. If so... let us know.

I've been using the baking soda and aqueous cream for about a week now, I missed one night out cause I just didn't have time. I've rubbed it into my scalp patches liberally and left it while I sleep (not greasy so no shower caps needed)......My scalp today feels smoother than it has for years. I can't wait to see how it feels this time next week.....I'm THRILLED! I've tried so much crap on my scalp it isn't funny.........and low and behold, good ole baking soda is doing the job :)

Now... just be careful.
Please don't eat the box of baking soda. Read the warning labels on the outside of the box first. It says that its purpose is as an antacid and that by ingesting it may interact with certain prescription drugs... also no child should ingest it under 5 years old. You also have to wait until it is completely dissolved otherwise it may do a number on the stomach. Anyway, I wanted to warn others just in case their desperation caused them to take this product internally without its possible consequences and side effects.
Of course, as a poultice or as a shampoo or whatever, externally... that's a different story.
Anybody have any negative stories about baking soda??
Continue to let us know what your experiences are with this product.
Blessings,
Joe

I was setting here thinking. The reason that my mom pool may help my P is because she puts Baking Soda in it to bring the PH up. My Butt is going to get in that pool ever day I can.

I'm still applying the aqueous cream and baking soda to my scalp. I also use a nit comb to remove flakes while the cream is on my scalp - its amazing how much comes off. Its getting less now because I'm getting rid of a lot of the plaques. So far, I can't speak highly enough of baking soda. I still itch - it doesn't seem to stop that but it IS getting rid of the flakes and thats a darn good start!

this on the "tips for P"...on the conversation board.....giving the credit to Brandy, of course.....
and so far it is working for me.....I've had scalp P for years and nothing would help....nothing....I started using MG217 everyday and it took some of the redness away, plus cut down on some of the plaque....however I noticed big handfuls of hair started to come out...........and the only thing I could attribute it to was the MG217.....so I decided to try baking soda on my scalp..... I added half a small box to bath water....dunked my hair to get it wet and put the other half box on my head and swirled it all over to get it worked in. Read some magazines, and soaked for about a half hour......rinsed my hair and shampooed it with Paul Mitchell shampoo and voila' plaque just about all gone...few leftovers that I found after dilligently seeking them out.....that was 2 days ago. I can't believe how good it feels!!!! so today after my sun tanning in the BA cabana and swimming in the pool I shall do it again...just to keep it rolling along....by the way I also rubbed the Baking Soda into my ears and behind...and that too seems to have halted the P. I also had about one inch of P coming down & across, my forehead from the hairline....GONE!
sure hope this keeps up...its feels so good....not to have it on at least one part of the body...... gotta go out while the sun is shinin'

Just got in from the Pool. Mom was putting Baking Soda in it as I was swimming. It was so nice to get out of the pool and not have to put med on right after getting out.
The water felt soft. This was the first time that I was in the pool when she was putting in Baking soda.
I am in the sun for an hour now.
I have been taking it slow in the sun.

My scalp is still smooth and almost completely flakeless....its great! I even wore a *shudder* BLACK TOP yesterday.....

after the first time of use ...it really cleared up the scalp....I had been using MG217 and my hair was coming out in handfuls...I didn't know if it was the shampoo or what...but now I think it was BREAKING off and not coming out by the roots...so I waited a few days to wash my hair again since I had been washing it everyday and I'm sure washing out the natural oils....so now today I washed it the same way I did before by just dumping a cupful on my head and working it in....then leaving it for about fort-five mins while I read in the tub......there is no redness at ALL .......
happy day! but if I scratch my scalp and shake my head I see a fine mist of scalp P not a lot but it's there....so I think I shall do what Kiwi did and add it to a creamy oily base and give my scalp an oil treatment along with the baking soda....I just think I've washed my hair so much its dried out, as well as having scalp P.
But in spite of the dry hair it still feels good....and I'm happy with results so far......

Woohoo! Baking Soda is the new P wonder drug!
But seriously, would you happen to have any documentation or sources from P people or derms recommending it's use? I could find none in my Googling.
I do UVBNB right now and I've got very good control of 90% of my P (skin again!!), but I'd like to combine treatments since I found some combinations work nice, like Dovanex and light. I'd prefer a non-prescription method like coating myself with olive oil and rolling around on a tarp covered in baking soda! :) Would be fun actually! Co-workers would be a bit shoked... but to hell with them! P discrimination is punishable! :)

I tried soaking my entire body a couple of times, but I found that it hurt too much after my skin had dried. It seems like the thinner my plaques are, the more they hurt.
However, I *love* the effect that it has on my scalp. Kiwigirl, what exactly have you been mixing the baking soda with so it's just on your scalp? Does anyone else have any suggestions for what to mix baking soda with?
Thanks!

Just got back from shopping......
as far as mixing baking soda with a cream or ointment....mmmm!
I don't know what Kiwi used cause I don't know Australian...:D
what ever aqueous cream is???got me! aqua means water so I think it must be something water soluble. anyway I'm going to be mixing mine now and I'm using just a lotion that is thin enough to get to the scalp....maybe creams or ointments are too thick....the best thing to do is only mix enough for one application and see how it goes........ like in a cup......
good luck and please report back on how it is working....its going to take more than one treatment I'm sure but who cares if it works....

After agonizing with my annoying scalp p, I decided to try the baking soda idea, and it seems to be working pretty well! I'm thrilled!! I haven't quite figured out the best technique, but here's what I've done:
The first night, I put olive oil on my scalp (which is a somewhat normal routine for me), then I put the baking soda on top. You could have made cookies on my head! (LOL) I have to tell you the burning from the baking soda was unbearable, so I took a shower within 5 minutes of trying this experiment.
The next morning, without the oil, I put baking soda on my scalp when I got up. It stayed on my dry hair for about 5 minutes. Then I washed it out using the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Oil Shampoo. I just got the shampoo the other day--another excellent suggestion from these message boards!! At first, the baking soda and tea tree shampoo burned a bit. But, I let it sit for a few minutes, and kept shampooing it around.
I did the same routine this morning. My husband doesn't even say a word about the baking soda stuck to my hair--he's used to me with shower caps, bandanas, olive oil, and lots of tears, so he knows not say anything anymore. Anyway...good results!!!! I'm finding less itching and less scaling. So far, so good.
I've also recently taken the nightshades out of my diet, as well as soda and alcohol. I'm thinking about dairy next. I also take cod liver oil, turmeric and red clover.
I've had scalp p for 20+ years (I'm 39 y.o.). The past 2 to 3 years have been horrible. Scratching, flaking, bleeding and finally, depression. But the baking soda has been good the past couple of days. I'm not sure the best way to apply it. I've been leaving baking soda snow all over the bathroom sink.
I'd much rather use baking soda than Dermasmoothe.

your house sounds like mine....my husband doesn't even notice (or at least doesn't say anything) about my strange get-ups...especially on my head.....I've been fighting scalp P for so long now. At first I thought it was seborheic dermatitis, but as it turned out, and after plaques appeared all over body, I realized it was P. and got my docs confirmation.
I'm sitting here with baking soda and lotions mixed together in a plastic/paper cup (the kind you can throw away) applied all over my scalp...and as it dries it is becoming harder ....(didn't they have a recipe for kids playdoe made from this stuff?) but I know it will wash right out...hate to wash it....cause it feels so fresh....I first wet my hair throughly, then applied the mix, then combed it all back...(sleeked like a skinned cat) and pulled the itty bitty strands into a ponytail.....also dotted it behind ears where there is P.

Cornstarch? Yep, one of the food groups somewhere. For those that aren't familiar with it, cornstarch is a white powder normally used in cooking. However, it turns out to be very healing for human skin. It can be used to heal diaper rashes or heat rashes. Cornstarch is also a great all natural dusting powder.
Well this is what i found. But who would have thought of Baking Soda. Maybe we have lots of thing in the kitchen that may help. Who knows till we try

moisturiser/cream....that is.
As long as it hasn't got perfumes and garbage in it......I'd mix it with the B/Soda and see how it goes. Lets face it, a moisturiser isn't a big RISK taking thing.
Interesting thing I found last night......thought I'd try JUST the aqueous cream without baking soda.....and damn my scalps itchy today, which leads to one conclusion imo. Baking soda is DEFINATELY "the one" ;)

I have had P for 35 years and for the first time it is as itchy as heck. I accepted having P years ago but was never bothered by itching. It is to the point of distraction. Of course, my dermo is moving offices and has been closed for the last five days (this started 4 days ago). Yesterday I went to my primary care physician and he perscribed prednisone for a short 3 days. I have used olux foam, ultravate, cultivate, dovenox...but NEVER heard of baking soda! I can't wait to get home from work and try it in the bathtub. I did notice that when I go in my salt water pool, my skin is better, but I don't like cold water! Any advice on how much baking soda to put in a tubful of water?

I bought a big bag of baking soda at Sam's the other day (10 lb, I believe). It comes in a resealable plastic bag with a handy scoop inside. Seems like it cost around $4 or $5.

Sally
I don't know if that is what size she get or not but I will ask her. I bet she does. She comes out with the Baking Soda and says swim in it I always do what mom says LOL. (Well sometimes).
I have to say that the P is the best it has looked in years. As I have said many time if it was not for my Brother finding all of you I would still be locked up in the house. You all have been there for me and I do not know where I would have been without you there by my side helping me. You all are the best.

You must moisturize your skin after using baking soda in the bath. After a couple of days you will notice that your lesions will become very dry and itchy. Moisturizing with Aquaphor ointment will keep them smooth, moist and itch free.

I put about half a box of baking soda in the bath and sat in it for about half an hour. My skin burned alot. It stopped the itch, but burned. Is it normal for it to burn before it gets better? Waiting to hear from others before taking another baking soda bath.

Maybe you should cut down on the Baking Soda. It did sting at first when I started using it. Now it has not. I swim through it in the pool maybe I am just use to it now.
Kiwigirl said this
It stung for a while.....then it settled
Dana-Chan
I tried soaking my entire body a couple of times, but I found that it hurt too much after my skin had dried. It seems like the thinner my plaques are, the more they hurt.
However, I *love* the effect that it has on my scalp. Kiwigirl, what exactly have you been mixing the baking soda with so it's just on your scalp?
I hope this helps
Good luck and keep use posted

I mix 4 heaped teaspoons of baking soda with a cup of Aqueous cream.
Sally was going to try and see if there was a product similar to Aqueous in the US.....any luck Sally?
I'd imagine that if the baking soda was mixed with a emoilient or moisturiser that has NO perfumes etc.....it should be effective.
I still have 3 or 4 stubborn patches that just don't want to go.....but even they are smoother and less aggressive than they were before.

I got my little box of Baking Soda. I will try in just a moment. I can't wait to see the results. I am going to use the whole 1 lb. box in the tub. That is the way that I am going to celebrate the Independence Day !!! Just relaxing !!! and of course, a good dinner and some fire works after that.
I am glad for your bonus, Denise !!! Enjoy it !!!
I will post later...

Hey Maria
how'd you like your BS bath!?
:)

Well... it didn't work. I didn't see a difference, because 1 lb of Baking Soda wasn't enough for my big tub. I need to get more and try again. How much you use, Denise ? 12 lb. in just one shower ?

LOL!!! No I don't use 12lbs
I have a standard size tub....filled the water is about 11" deep
I still haven't found the "right" amount to use.... but 1 small box would seem like plenty....more wouldn't hurt tho either i'm sure.
I'm sorry it didn't seem to help any ....my p. doesn't get "better" necessarily...but i feel it relieves the itch and pain and it sloughs off a lot of the dead skin i didn't even realize was on the leasions...Plus just taking the time to have a relaxing bath is always good...heavily moisturizing is also good afterwards.
hope next time is better!

Maria,
The first time I tried the BS bath, it didn't seem to help at all, although it burned while I was in the tub. Today I decided to try again. Instead of using 1/4 box of BS, I used 3/4 box IN the tub water and I made a paste with the rest of the box. After wetting my skin, I put the paste on it. I then got in the tub and wherever my skin wasn't in the tub, it still had the BS paste on it.It still burned, but not as much as the first time. As soon as I got out of the tub I put moisturizer on and I must say,for the first time in weeks, I feel some relief from the itching!

Hi guys!
Newbie here! I was thrilled to hear that baking soda baths helped you all. I cannot wait to try it out on my son. The only thing that I would caution you about is if you drink the baking soda solution...
"In rare cases, metabolic alkalosis develops in a person who has ingested too much base from substances such as baking soda (bicarbonate of soda).
Too much bicarbonate can wreak havoc with the body's acid-base balance and lead to metabolic alkalosis (see Section 12, Chapter 159). The high sodium content may also cause problems for people with heart failure or high blood pressure.
Alkalosis may cause irritability, muscle twitching, muscle cramps, or no symptoms at all. If the alkalosis is severe, prolonged contraction and spasms of muscles (tetany) can develop.
A sample of blood taken from an artery shows that the blood is alkaline."
Merck Manual, 2nd edition
Keep up the good work...just use caution!

I don't drink the stuff I just swim and bath in it . Thanks for the info.
My head is so much better. I would say that I am 90% P free on my head. It was so bad before that it was 100% P on my head and it was going down my neck and around my ears also in my ears. I hope that it keeps working only time will tell. I am a little afraid of the stress that I am going through right now that my P will get bad again.

Bump is simply a way to move a topic back up to the top of the boards so others can catch up on reading a popular topic without having to dig too deeply. The most recent postings are always listed first.

I tried an Aveeno Oatmeal bath with Baking Soda added, twice this week -- I like it. Hopefully it's OK to mix these two...they both seem natural enough
