2009 National Volunteer Leadership Conference

Program tracks

Advocating for a Cure

At this session, you will become equipped to mobilize others in your community to take political action for greater government investment in psoriasis research and a cure. Enthusiastic, experienced advocates at this workshop will become leaders of a corps of activists who will turn psoriasis advocacy into a rocking national movement that will change Congress forever!

Community Organizing

Imagine having a Psoriasis Foundation division in your community run by local volunteers. This workshop will provide you with the information, essential tools and resources you'll need to build a thriving volunteer organization in your community!

Psoriasis and Your Immune System

Understanding the immune system is essential to understanding psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. This presentation will explain the basic biology of how the immune system works and what happens when it malfunctions. This presentation will also explain the Foundation’s research priorities and how immunology, genetics and other research pathways will accelerate the discovery, development and delivery of new therapeutics and ultimately a cure.

Families for a Cure

For children with psoriasis, their family's support and involvement are key to overcoming the many challenges of the disease. This workshop for families will provide ideas and tools to strengthen the impact families can make when raising disease awareness for the general public, advocating for more research dollars by visiting members of Congress, or sharing their stories with the media. It will also teach kids and teens how to become local ambassadors and speak on behalf of the millions of people who have psoriasis. Join other families who are getting involved on both the local and national levels and meet some unique kids who are the new movers and shakers in the psoriasis community.

Psoriasis One to One

A diagnosis of psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis can be devastating. While friends and family can lend their support, there's nothing like the support of another person who has "walked in your shoes." This workshop will unveil our new volunteer program called Psoriasis One to One, for those who have walked in "those shoes" and now want to help others. By attending this workshop, you will learn how to start this program in your local community.

Just for Kids

Kids will have the opportunity to express their feelings about psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis through hands-on art activities. Teen mentors who also have psoriasis will lead self-image building exercises and empower young people to share their feelings in constructive and creative ways. Swim time and other fun activities will also be available and brown-bag lunches will be provided.

Walk to Cure Psoriasis

Walk to Cure Psoriasis is one of the most effective and efficient ways to reach people, raise awareness and generate dollars to support research for a cure. This session will provide you with tools and best practices to build a new walk or grow an existing walk in your community.

Other conference activities

Health Fair

This two-hour open forum will allow you to meet with health care professionals and health and wellness professionals who will answer questions about treatment options, your general health and ways to stay healthy. It will also include round-table sessions with dermatologists who will be available for question-and-answers. Free chair massages, blood pressure tests and other health and wellness activities and evaluations will be available, along with much more!

Exhibit Hall

Vendors from around the country will display products ranging from traditional to complementary treatments. The exhibit hall will be open for a day and half where you can visit the informative exhibits and talk to the representatives who can answer questions about their treatments and services. This is a great opportunity to learn about available products and how they work, and to take home samples!

Closing Session

Everyone will gather together to wrap-up the day's events and close out the working portion of the conference. This will be a great time to share collaborative efforts and volunteer highlights, and to recognize those who give their time to move our mission forward.

Saturday Night Social Event

Time to celebrate all the great work we've done, relax and have fun. The evening's social event will provide a Tex Mex buffet and no-host bar.
