National Psoriasis Foundation names first female Medical Board chair

UPenn dermatologist Dr. Abby Van Voorhees appointed for expertise in psoriatic diseases

PORTLAND, Ore. (Feb. 25, 2014)—For the first time in its 46-year history, the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF)—the world's largest nonprofit organization serving people with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis—has appointed a female chair of its medical board. The Psoriasis Foundation selected dermatologist Dr. Abby Van Voorhees to this honor for her two decades of expertise and dedication in psoriatic disease care and research.

As chair, Van Voorhees will lead the National Psoriasis Foundation Medical Board, comprised of more than 20 of the nation's premier psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis experts, in providing leadership and guidance to the NPF on medical issues related to psoriatic diseases.

Abby Van Voorhees, M.D., is the associate professor of dermatology at The Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and director of their Psoriasis and Phototherapy Treatment Center. Van Voorhees received her bachelor of arts in biology from Brown University and her medical degree from Yale University.

Throughout her career, Van Voorhees has been active in clinical research in dermatology, particularly issues related to the treatment of psoriasis—the most common autoimmune disease in the country, affecting up to 7.5 million Americans. Her treatment specialty involves phototherapy, including narrowband UVB and PUVA, a commonly prescribed psoriasis treatment. Currently, Van Voorhees is medical editor of Dermatology World, the official magazine of the American Academy of Dermatology. She has been a member of the National Psoriasis Foundation Medical Board since 2007.

Additionally, the NPF named Dr. Mark Lebwohl, chair of the Medical Board from 2000 until 2014, as its chairman emeritus. Lebwohl is the chair of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai in New York City.
