New pill sizes coming for methotrexate

Methotrexate is one of the most commonly prescribed systemic (oral or by injection) therapies for moderate to severe psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. If you take methotrexate by tablet, your pill counting is about to get a lot easier. Barr Laboratories of Pomona, N.Y., has developed methotrexate pills in four new sizes: 5, 7.5, 10 and 15 milligrams (mg). The pills will be available under the brand name Trexall.
Until now, methotrexate was only available in 2.5-mg size. The weekly dose for psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis can range from 5 mg to 25 mg, or 2 to 10 pills. With the new sizes, some doses might even require only a single pill. Reducing the number of pills that have to be counted out cut down on the risk of over- and under-dosing.
