Genetic Ties to Psoriasis

Psoriasis Foundation press release: Researchers have identified three of the first genes associated with psoriasis. The finding, published in the December 2003 issue of Nature Genetics, marks a significant advance in the understanding of psoriasis, and may lead to new treatments for the disease. Our articles below help guide you through psoriasis genetics, and explain how we continue to support genetics research.

How Are Genes Involved in Psoriasis?

Psoriasis Advance article: How do genes contribute to the development of psoriasis? This quick primer defines genes, DNA and proteins, and explains how they may work together to trigger psoriasis in about 2 to 3 percent of the population. Full article

Researchers Solving the Genetic Mystery of Psoriasis

Psoriasis Advance article: As the saying goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day." And so it is with a team of international geneticists brought together recently by the National Psoriasis Foundation in the heart of that ancient city to discuss the progress of their work. The conclusion: years of research have passed and years lay ahead, but slowly and surely the genes behind psoriasis are being revealed. Full article

Chromosome 6 Evidence Grows

Psoriasis Advance article: An international group of psoriasis genetics researchers funded by the National Psoriasis Foundation recently established "unequivocal evidence" that psoriasis is associated with a genetic region located on chromosome 6 within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). More Resources

Genetics: Psoriasis research starts with the skin, becomes deeper with the immune system, and ends at the "beginning" with genetics. While it is known that psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease, researchers are exploring how the immune system becomes activated through genetic missteps.

National Psoriasis Foundation Tissue Bank: In order to speed up genetic research of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, the Psoriasis Foundation opened the National Psoriasis Tissue Bank (NPTB) in 1994. The tissue bank remains the first and only public source of genetic material for researchers investigating psoriasis.
