Director of National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases highlights psoriasis in 2009 budget request

On March 8, 2008, Stephen Katz, M.D., Ph.D., director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), presented the NIAMS 2009 budget request to the House Appropriations Subcommittee. NIAMS is the primary National Institutes of Health agency responsible for researching psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. While requesting a much needed funding increase for NIAMS, Dr. Katz drew special attention to the need to continue research in a number of disease areas, including psoriasis. By specifically mentioning psoriasis research, Dr. Katz's statement helps raise awareness about the disease amongst members of Congress and their staff.
The National Psoriasis Foundation joins Dr. Katz in hopes that identifying the genes that cause susceptibility to psoriasis will contribute to the development of new and improved psoriasis therapies รข?? and, eventually, a cure. Further, the Psoriasis Foundation is encouraged by Dr. Katz's statements regarding future biomedical research to improve the lives of patients with chronic diseases, such as psoriasis, which affect millions of Americans.
