The New York Times examines preferential treatment in dermatology

The New York Times sheds light on a "two-tier system" at the dermatologist's
office, which favors patients seeking cosmetic treatments over those seeking
medical treatment. "The Psoriasis Foundation has long been concerned about
the shortage of dermatologists able to treat patients with serious skin
diseases such as psoriasis," says Randy Beranek, president and CEO of the
National Psoriasis Foundation. "Effective disease management requires a
collaborative doctor-patient relationship, and collaboration requires
access."
The Psoriasis Foundation partners with dermatologists throughout the country
to address the issues raised in the Times article by:
- Conducting physician education programs on psoriasis management and
its impact on patients;
- Negotiating with insurance companies to amend restrictive
prescription coverage policies;
- Maintaining the only psoriasis-specific online physician directory
in the U.S.

The National Psoriasis Foundation would like to take this opportunity to recognize the many dermatologists who give countless hours of their time to serve the psoriasis community. These include members of the National Psoriasis Foundation Medical Board, both past and present, Board of Trustees member Lawrence Green, M.D., and the numerous others in the medical community who help us help you. Thank you.
