Ustekinumab shows a marked increase in efficacy over etanercept

In a head-to-head, randomized study funded by Centocor, Inc., ustekinumab showed a marked increase in efficacy over etanercept (Enbrel®) for the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis.
The primary endpoint of the 12 week study was the percentage of participants achieving at least a 75 percent reduction in psoriasis. At the end of the study:
- 74 percent of patients who received a high dose of ustekinumab achieved a 75 percent reduction.
- 68 percent of patients who received a low dose of ustekinumab achieved a 75 percent reduction.
- 57 percent of patients who received the FDA approved dose of Enbrel achieved a 75 percent reduction.
“We are pleased to see the strong clinical affect of ustekinumab for psoriasis,” said Bruce Bebo, Jr., National Psoriasis Foundation director of research. “Because the response to psoriasis treatments varies, it is important to have as many different types of treatments as possible. The addition of ustekinumab, which has a unique mechanism of action, is a big step forward.”
The National Psoriasis Foundation encourages those living with psoriatic diseases to partner with their physician to find the best treatment option.
