What is the National Psoriasis Foundation
Seal of Recognition?
As a service to consumers and the psoriasis community, the National Psoriasis Foundation has established the National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition. The Seal is intended to recognize products that provide benefit and relief for people with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. For more than 40 years, the National Psoriasis Foundation has been a forceful advocate for the 7.5 million Americans who live with this chronic and often debilitating autoimmune disease.
This program is strictly voluntary. Companies interested in participating in the program must submit toxicity tests to a medical review panel who are experts in psoriatic diseases.
What does the National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition signify?
The National Psoriasis Foundation Seal is an educational tool to help people with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis care for their skin and joints. The Seal signifies that the product has been reviewed by a medical panel and shown that it may be beneficial in managing psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis.
Which products are eligible?
The National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition is available for nonprescription products that meet a set of established criteria reviewed by a panel of medical professionals.
How does a product earn the Seal of Recognition?
To earn the National Psoriasis Foundation Seal, the manufacturer of a product that could aid in the management of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis must:
(1) Provide scientific data showing that its product(s) aids in the management of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, this may include: hydrating the skin, reducing redness, managing psoriasis scales, reducing joint pain, helping people who live with arthritis, among other symptoms;
(2) Affirm the product is nonprescription;
(3) Prove that the product is non-irritating and contains no chemicals known to cause psoriasis irritation;
(4) Confirm that the product can be used as an adjunct therapy along with prescription products;
(5) Validate the product does not harm the user;
(6) Be a product(s) commonly known to be beneficial in managing psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
Who determines which products carry the National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition?
A National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition panel of medical professionals reviews each product. The panel will review the testing data for safety, toxicity and ingredients as well as formulation data. The panel will exercise independent judgment in all of its decision-making related to product review. Find out more about our review panel.
What is the cost?
Manufacturers who submit products for the National Psoriasis Foundation Seal will pay a non-refundable, per-product application fee. Manufacturers whose products are accepted into the National Psoriasis Foundation Seal program will be charged an annual, per-product license fee.
Seal product license fees are annual and nonrefundable. The Seal may be used for generally two years on Recognized Products, subject to renewal upon payment of an additional fee.
What is the disclaimer that accompanies the Seal of Recognition?
The National Psoriasis Foundation will publish a National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition disclaimer in the Seal Product License section of our Web site. The National Psoriasis Foundation will require the manufacturer to include a disclaimer on product packaging, in promotional materials, publicity releases and other materials and statements that refer to the National Psoriasis Foundation or the National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition program.
Under what restrictions/conditions will the Seal Product License be terminated?
The National Psoriasis Foundation retains the right to revoke permission to use the National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition in case of misrepresentations contained in supporting documentation or breach of the terms of the OTC Product License Agreement. It is further understood that the National Psoriasis Foundation Seal of Recognition may only be used with the specific product that has been approved.
