On Nov. 6, 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the topical corticosteroid Bryhali (halobetasol propionate) Lotion, 0.01 percent, for the treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis.
The prescription-only topical, manufactured by Ortho Dermatologics, can be used once a day for eight weeks.
Ortho Dermatologics published the efficacy and safety data from two phase 3 studies on Bryhali Lotion in the current issue of The Journal of Drugs in Dermatology. According to the study, by week eight, 37 percent (study 1) and 38 percent (study 2) of patients using Bryhali Lotion had achieved treatment success, defined as a) at least a two-grade improvement from their baseline in an Investigator Global Assessment score and b) “clear” or “almost clear” skin.
At four weeks post-treatment, the recurrence of psoriasis symptoms was not observed in patients using Bryhali Lotion. Patients also tolerated the topical well. Approximately one in five reported some adverse reactions, the most common being upper respiratory tract infection, skin irritation and high blood sugar.
“The therapeutic world of psoriasis has evolved to the point where 50 percent of our patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis can be clear of disease for years,” says Jerry Bagel, M.D., Psoriasis Treatment Center of Central New Jersey, East Windsor, New Jersey, and NPF medical board member.
During a day-long Patient-Focused Drug Development meeting on psoriasis in 2016, the FDA heard directly from individuals living with psoriatic disease about their challenges in managing the symptoms of psoriasis. Thanks to NPF's advocacy efforts, more than 200 individuals impacted by psoriasis joined this meeting. Participants expressed a recurring theme: the need for new, effective and tolerable treatment options to improve their quality of life.
Since 1987, NPF has funded more than $19 million in research into psoriatic disease, helping to lay the groundwork for new drugs and, eventually, a cure. NPF also connects people with clinical trials so that more treatment options may be tested and ultimately approved.
