You’re invited to Advocacy Day in Saint Paul, Minnesota!

| MaryAnn McCabe
Here at the National Psoriasis Foundation, we are excited to announce that we will be hosting an Advocacy Day in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on Tuesday, March 13. We hope you will join us!

What is an Advocacy Day? An Advocacy Day is hosted by an organization to allow its members to meet their state lawmakers. It’s your opportunity to advocate and explain why you support legislation relevant to you and your organization.

What is NPF advocating for on the March 13 Advocacy Day? In Minnesota, lawmakers will be introducing legislation that will curb step therapy protocols. Under step therapy, you must first fail on one or more medications chosen by their insurer before coverage is granted for the drug prescribed by your health care provider. In the psoriatic disease drug classes, step therapy is used approximately 50 percent of the time. This is unacceptable.

This critical piece of the legislation provides five instances for which a patient can request an override of step therapy. If a patient is granted the override by his insurer, the insurer will respond within 72 hours. If it is an emergency, the patient will have a response within 24 hours.

That is why we are working to pass a step therapy bill in Minnesota – to ensure that step therapy protocols are safe for patients. Similar legislation has been passed in 18 states. If other states can pass it, Minnesota can, too!

Would you like to attend the March 13 Advocacy Day? Do you want to help us secure these overrides for our patient community? If so, you can support this legislative effort by educating your lawmakers on this issue. One of the most valuable tools for passing this important piece of legislation is you — the patient.

We want to ensure Minnesota lawmakers hear directly from patients and health care providers about the importance of properly treating psoriatic disease. This is your opportunity to tell lawmakers how step therapy has personally impacted your health. And if you are a provider, this is the perfect time to share how it affects your ability to treat patients.

If you are interested in educating Minnesota lawmakers on your experience with step therapy protocols, please contact our state government affairs manager, MaryAnn McCabe, at [email protected] or register here. (NPF is offering a limited number of travel scholarships.)
