FDA approves Duobrii for plaque psoriasis

Adults with plaque psoriasis have a new topical to choose from. On April 25, 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Duobrii (halobetasol propionate and tazarotene), the first and currently only lotion indicated for adults with plaque psoriasis that contains this combination of active ingredients. This first-in-class topical is expected to be available in June.

Manufactured by Ortho Dermatologics, Duobrii lotion combines the anti-inflammatory steroid halobetasol propionate to clear plaques with the vitamin A derivative tazarotene to help extend the clearing process by limiting the overgrowth of cells that cause plaque formation.

The prescription topical is designed to be used daily as needed (for up to 52 weeks) by rubbing a thin layer of the lotion on affected skin. A Phase 2 clinical trial found that the dual-agent treatment was superior in reducing psoriasis symptoms on the skin than treatments consisting of only halobetasol or tazarotene.

Kelly M. Cordoro, M.D., dermatologist at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, and NPF medical board member, says that such a combination topical is a first and is a convenient option for many people living with psoriasis.

"Psoriasis impacts patients in a number of negative ways,” says Cordoro. “One of these is the time it takes to apply topical medications. Having a combination topical product available that contains two key therapeutic agents provides patients with a convenient and unique ‘two-in-one' option that offers two distinct mechanisms of action against psoriasis. This will ease the burden of applying several different medications throughout the day.”

Since 1987, NPF has invested more than $19 million in psoriatic disease research, which has directly contributed to the wave of newly approved treatment options like Duobrii. NPF also helps connect patients with clinical trials so that more drugs may be tested and ultimately approved.

After the FDA approval process is complete, NPF provides up-to-date information on the latest treatment options to health care providers and offers resources to ensure patients access the best care possible
