If you have psoriatic arthritis, it’s too easy to fall into the trap of isolation. You might be the only person you know with PsA. You might have a doctor who doesn’t fully understand what you’re going through. You might have friends and family who don’t get it, either.
If you’re falling into this trap, we might be able to throw you a lifeline. It’s called Be Joint Smart.
At Be Joint Smart, for a few hours on a Saturday, you get to experience what it’s like not just to have a savvy health care provider, but to have a health care team.
A dermatologist and a rheumatologist will talk about the treatments available today and the research that will bring us the treatments of the future. You’ll have time to ask the experts questions about your own situation. The setting is informal and the experts are happy to chat.
Some Be Joint Smart events add a physical therapist to the team. He or she will lead you and the rest of the audience in some joint-friendly strength-building exercises you can do at home. Can’t do the exercises? The PT will show you how to modify them to suit you.
Finally, when the lineup includes a dietitian, you’ll go home with plenty of ideas on how you can eat to promote health rather than to promote disease.
You can also socialize with a room full of people with PsA (or people with psoriasis who may be at risk for PsA) who understand what it’s like to live with this disease.
Voices from Be Joint Smart
Sheila Driscoll of Portland, Oregon, who has attended previous Be Joint Smart events, says, “The thing about a disease like this is the doctors are going to treat you for what you’re presenting, but it’s up to you to learn all you can so you can ask the right questions.”
R. Peter Bonafede, M.D., of Providence Arthritis Center in Portland, Oregon, and a past Be Joint Smart presenter, says he understands why people are frustrated. “Maybe you’ve never been sick, now you are and there’s no cure. But your pain can get better. It’s up to you.”
