2018 Open Enrollment dates you need to know

If you have Medicare or purchase your insurance on the Health Insurance Marketplace, you are entering the time when you can make changes to your 2018 health plan.

This annual period, called Open Enrollment, is an opportunity to review your plan options and make sure you’re enrolled in a health plan that meets your needs. During this time, you’ll want to make sure your plan offers the best coverage for your prescriptions and health care services (including appointments and lab work) at a cost you can afford.

Remember, even if you are satisfied with your current plan, your health care costs and coverage may change in the coming year. Open Enrollment is the time to evaluate your personal health care needs and make changes to your coverage.

For more information about how to compare plan options, request a free Health Insurance Quick Guide or contact an NPF Patient Navigator by email or phone (1-800-723-9166, option 1).

Open Enrollment for Medicare

Open Enrollment for Medicare is Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, 2017 for coverage that begins on Jan. 1, 2018.

During this time, you can:
  • Enroll in, switch or un-enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Medicare Part D)
  • Switch from Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and B) to Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C)
  • Switch Medicare Advantage plans
To learn more about Open Enrollment for Medicare, request a free Health Insurance Quick Guide or contact an NPF Patient Navigator by email or phone (1-800-723-9166, option 1).

Open Enrollment for the Marketplace

If you do not have health insurance through your job, you can shop for and purchase a plan on the Federal Health Insurance Marketplace (also simply called “Marketplace”).

This year, the dates for Marketplace Open Enrollment have changed.

Open Enrollment for the Marketplace is Nov. 1 to Dec. 15, 2017 for coverage that begins on Jan. 1, 2018.

During this time, you can:
  • Enroll in a Marketplace plan for the first time
  • Re-enroll in Marketplace plan. (If you currently have a plan through the Marketplace, you must re-enroll every year or select a new plan to enroll in. If you do not do this, you will either be re-enrolled in the same plan or a plan will be chosen for you.)
  • Switch to a different Marketplace plan
  • Get subsidies (cost assistance) on a Marketplace health plan
If you live in a state that has its own marketplace, you may have a longer enrollment period.

For more information about Marketplace Open Enrollment, request a free Health Insurance Quick Guide or contact an NPF Patient Navigator by email or phone (1-800-723-9166, option 1).
