Hey, friends! Welcome to Week 5, the final three days of Psoriasis Awareness Month (#PSAM16).
Throughout August, we introduced four themes and challenges (with prizes) to teach you everything you need to know about psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, while motivating you to help spread the word that psoriasis isn’t contagious – awareness is!
It’s not too late for any newcomers to join the fun …. after you read the terms and conditions, that is. Some of these challenges have a social media aspect, so be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and Instagram to participate.
- Week 1 is Get Informed. Take the Week 1 challenge. The deadline is Friday, Sept. 2, 2016 at 5 p.m. PST.
- Week 2 is Get Healthy. Take the Week 2 challenge. The deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2016 at 5 p.m. PST.
- Week 3 is Get Involved. Take the Week 3 challenge. The deadline is Monday, Sept. 12, 2016 at 5 p.m. PST.
- Week 4 is Get Connected. Take the Week 4 challenge. The deadline is Monday, Sept. 19, 2016 at 5 p.m. PST.
Just because it’s the last week of Psoriasis Awareness Month doesn’t mean you should stop all those good habits you’ve formed. For Week 5, we challenge you to keep going!
Week 5: Keep Going
Don’t let the pro athletes and fashion models fool you – wellness doesn’t come naturally or easily to anyone. It’s a conscious effort all of us must make to live long and happy lives.
It’s a commitment we make to ourselves to kick unhealthy habits, fuel our bodies with nutritious food, flush it out with plenty of water, get enough sleep and exercise, and recondition the brain to think positively instead of harping on the things we can’t change.
But what are you supposed to do when you’re living with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis and it feels as though your immune system is working against you? It’s simple. You fight back.
Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis have this uncanny ability to bring you down both physically and emotionally. So you have to fight back physically and emotionally because you’re in control of this disease, not the other way around.
Take comfort in knowing you’re not alone; there are 7.5 million other people around the U.S. who are fighting the same battle. Our secret weapon is that we can work together to spread awareness and lean on each other for support.
Throughout Psoriasis Awareness Month, NPF gave you the tools you need to take control of your psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. So get informed, get healthy, get involved, get connected and keep going! Together, we will win the war against psoriatic disease.
Connect the Dots
Did you know the world’s largest nonprofit serving psoriatic disease started off as a tiny classified ad in a Portland, Oregon, newspaper?
Beverly Foster’s husband placed the ad hoping to find people his wife could talk to about living with psoriasis. Within a week, Mrs. Foster received more than 100 phone calls. She began organizing meetings, and in 1967, formed what is now known as the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF).
Today, NPF has a staff of knowledgeable and caring Patient Navigators who answer phone calls and emails from all over the world at our Patient Navigation Center.
We bring you the latest news on research and treatments with Advance Online as well as personal stories about others overcoming psoriatic disease on the NPF Blog. We ask medical experts your most pressing questions through our free health webcasts.
As advocates for patient rights, we are in the state and federal political trenches working to shape the laws and policies that affect people with psoriatic disease. Through Team NPF, we organize fundraising events to raise money for the research grants we award to scientists working to find better treatments and a cure.
We are constantly connecting people living with psoriatic disease across the U.S. through local education events such as More Than Skin Deep and Be Joint Smart. We also do this virtually through our Psoriasis One to One mentor program as well as TalkPsoriasis, the world’s largest online support group for people living with psoriatic disease, and Citizen Pscientist, our interactive, virtual research community open to anyone who wants to help advance science.
Connecting people with psoriatic disease and giving them the information they need to live full and active lives is what Beverly Foster and her husband set out to do 50 years ago. Today, we’re pretty much doing the exact same thing except on a much grander scale.
None of this would be possible without the hard work of our faithful volunteers. So thank you for keeping the National Psoriasis Foundation going strong.
Take the Week 5 Challenge
PsAM16 wouldn’t be complete without a grand prize worthy of a true Psoriatic Psuperhero. For a chance to win a free trip for two to the National Psoriasis Foundation National Volunteer Conference in Chicago in August 2017, take the Week 5 challenge.
Then tell us what being a Psoriatic Psuperhero means to you! Email your story and photo to [email protected] and we’ll share the results on the NPF Blog on World Psoriasis Day, Oct. 29, 2016. Thanks for joining us for #PsAM16, and good luck on your final challenge!
