Here comes the 2016 edition of More Than Skin Deep!

| Steve Bieler

The More Than Skin Deep program starts on March 19 and travels to 20 cities around the U.S. before concluding on June 25.

What is it?

More Than Skin Deep is a series of free Saturday-morning talks with experts in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis who know the latest research and treatment options. Our presenters give a talk and answer your questions in an informal, relaxed setting. You might even get in some questions you never thought to ask your regular doctor.

You’ll also hear from local volunteers who live with psoriatic disease every day. In fact, you’ll be in a room filled with people just like you, who understand what you’re going through. You can hang with them afterwards for the social hour.

Why is this year’s theme “Fitting It All Together”?

Managing psoriatic disease can seem like a puzzle. Participants often wonder if they’re on the right treatment, what are the latest options, how research impacts care and what other people do to live with their disease. Through More Than Skin Deep, we’ll look at how these pieces fit together. By the time you leave, you’ll have new ideas and strategies for managing and taking control of your disease.

Why should I go?

If we haven’t convinced you yet, keep in mind these words from one of our volunteers, Rebecca Payne of Portland, Oregon: “If you don’t understand what’s happening to you, then you’re not able to help yourself.”

How does it work?

Kat Mulingtapang of Concord, California, was diagnosed with psoriasis in 2012 and psoriatic arthritis in 2013. Like most people who are first diagnosed, she didn’t know what it was. To help educate herself, she attended an More Than Skin Deep event in nearby San Francisco. Mulingtapang has come a long way in three years – on April 30 of this year, she’ll moderate the event.

“We try to run these events with the patient in mind,” she said. “We give the speakers the opportunity to go through their presentation, but we realize that everyone in the audience has questions. They’ve made a special effort to get here. We’ve had people drive three hours to get here. For some folks, this is a huge effort – usually they don’t even want to leave the house.”

Mulingtapang has helped moderate events that have drawn more than 100 people, but she keeps in mind that “as the moderator, it’s my job to make sure everyone gets heard. I make sure we stick to the agenda, but I let people know that we’ll get to their questions. They can also fill out cards on the table, and we’ll read their questions at the break.”

She also knows that people who come to these events are not just seeking knowledge. “More Than Skin Deep spreads knowledge, but it also helps to forge a community,” Mulingtapang said. “Our attendees want that one-on-one attention, and we do our best to provide it and to help them break out of their shell,” she said. “The mood in the room is positive. People leave happy. Once people experience it, they want to come again. They even want to volunteer.”
