You Are Not Alone in This Pandemic

| Steve Bieler

Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are isolating enough – the stares, the invasive questions, the self-consciousness, the feeling that no one understands what you are going through. Now we face the coronavirus, COVID-19 pandemic. Living through a pandemic and having to practice physical distancing adds a new burden for many people with psoriatic disease.

We launched the Patient Navigation Center in 2016 because we believe that no one with psoriatic disease, and no one who cares for someone with psoriatic disease, should have to go through it alone. Here are all the things a patient navigator can help you with:

  • Find a health care provider near you, including dermatologists and rheumatologists
  • Learn about the disease and treatment options
  • Understand how health insurance works
  • Learn about programs that may lower the cost of treatments
  • Connect patients and caregivers to other people living with psoriatic disease

Now we are all coping with COVID-19, and the Patient Navigation Center can help you with that, too. “COVID-19: Ways to stay healthy and positive,” is a new guide from NPF for dealing with these unusual times. The topics covered include tips on taking good care of yourself, how to deal with increased levels of anxiety and isolation, and a section on separating fact from fiction. The guide is free. All you have to do is ask your patient navigator for a copy.

You should also check out NPF medical board’s recommendations for patients with psoriatic disease. There’s a lot of misinformation floating around about COVID-19 and people with chronic conditions. It is important that you get the facts. The facts might eliminate a few of your worries.

Remember: You are part of a community, and our community is still here for you, raising money for new research, advocating for better treatment and care, educating our community and the public. Although today we can’t socialize in person as we did just a few short weeks ago, someday soon, we will. Until then, we can still connect.
