Here at NPF, we know that our goal of finding a cure for psoriatic disease is a marathon – not a sprint. It takes a group of dedicated researchers and doctors working in conjunction with a unified community to drive the next medical breakthroughs.
That’s why we are launching the Milestone to a Cure grant, which aims to support research projects focused on treatment durability, remission and the path toward a cure. We know that we won’t get there overnight and the hope is that every project funded under this grant will get us one step closer.
NPF is looking to fund up to four $100,000 research projects focused on getting us to the next step towards a cure. Of course, as a nonprofit, the ability to award the grant money is contingent on our supportive community. Without those living with psoriatic disease, friends, family and those in the medical community lending their support, our mission would be a short-lived one. Providing promising researchers and doctors with the means to bring about transformative change has been the top priority for the organization.
Nehal Mehta, M.D., Lasker Clinical Research Scholar at the National Institute of Health, has been one such promising researcher. Mehta has devoted his career to researching how inflammation in psoriasis elevates a patient’s risk for certain comorbidities, and he says he owes a lot to the help he got from NPF. He received a $75,000 Discovery Grant investigating how the same population of immune cells that drive disease in skin might also affect the cardiovascular system, which led to $12 million dollars in funding from the NIH.
“The Foundation has been here for me all along the way,” Mehta says. “It is a great, great synergistic relationship. NPF provided funding that was instrumental early in my research program that helped get me tenure at NIH. They’ve been a strong partner ever since.”
(You can read more about Mehta and his impressive career in the upcoming spring issue of NPF Advance.)
Funding the next milestone
NPF continues to lead in supporting the research that improves the quality of life for those with psoriatic disease. In these challenging times, it is all the more important to support the efforts of researchers. Please consider giving generously.
