National Psoriasis Foundation Launches #FlauntYourFlares Contest
Instagram Contest Encourages People to Embrace Their Skin, Even During Flares
Portland, Ore. (June 20, 2017) — The National Psoriasis Foundation, a patient advocacy organization providing programs and resources to help treat and manage psoriatic disease, today launched the #FlauntYourFlares Instagram hashtag contest. The contest encourages those living with psoriasis to embrace the physical impacts of the disease by posting images during a flare to Instagram with the #FlauntYourFlares hashtag and include a positive message about their body.
Psoriasis is a chronic, treatable immune-mediated disease that causes raised, red, scaly patches to appear on the skin. While any part of the body can be affected, psoriasis most commonly occurs on the elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms, and feet.
As summer approaches and clothing provides less coverage, more than eight million people dealing with psoriasis become more cognizant and self-conscious of their condition. In addition to the physical impact, roughly 2/3 of people with psoriasis say it makes them feel angry, frustrated, and helpless. The contest is designed to demonstrate that even when treating the disease with medications, flares are a reality and can happen any time. As temperatures rise, it does not mean people should cover up, not wear clothing that exposes their skin, or skip the pool or other outdoor activities.
“As part of our mission to dramatically improve the lives of those living with psoriatic disease, we are proud to be launching the #FlauntYourFlares contest,” said John Ogden, director of marketing and communications at National Psoriasis Foundation. “We know that many are affected every day not only with the physical impacts of psoriasis, but the emotional impacts as well. First and foremost, we encourage people to seek treatment for their disease, but also not be afraid to keep living a healthy, active lifestyle. As the weather gets warmer and clothing provides less coverage, we want people to not worry about what others may think or say and go ahead and flaunt their flares.”
As people post photos on Instagram with the hashtag #FlauntYourFlares, the image will be loaded to a web page on psoriasis.org and added to a wall of pictures. The Foundation will select two winners every week through August 31, 2017. One winner will be featured in a special #FlauntYourFlares social media campaign that will include their picture and inspiring message to help others embrace their flares. Both winners will receive a special #FlauntYourFlares healthy lifestyle kit.
While embracing flares and living life to the fullest is important in managing psoriatic disease, NPF encourages all people with psoriasis to work with a health care provider to find a treatment plan that will work for them.
